So many seem to have missed the point here.
This is not about rider prejudice or stereotyping - who really cares what the hell you're riding; it HOW you ride it to keep others and yourselves SAFE on the roads. Wanna do wheelies? Get off the public roads, away from pedestrians and anybody else and have a good time. Get a dirtbike. The real point here is wheelie riding and excessive speed ON PUBLIC ROADS places everyone else in real danger, which is why cops, lawyers, and judges call it "reckless driving" and "speeding".
Using public roads to prove something to yourself or your friends is ignorant and irresponsible. DO IT SOMEWHERE ELSE. If you crash and burn, at least you didn't take someone's relative with you.

Amen brother !!!! THATS the point. Hate the sin not the sinner.........

Atomic,

I wasn't 100 until last summer, when a speeder killed my son. Apparently you haven't lost a loved one to someone speeding.

Yes, texting etc. while driving should be outlawed - when you're driving, that's ALL you should be doing. Not all laws are fair, or even smart, but most exist for good reason - to protect us all, even you. Which is why you shouldn't speed anywhere, except on a racetrack.

The third time he was way too close, so I hit his kill switch. Not sure how he saved it, but he got off the road.

If that is even remotely true, which I find pretty hard to believe, then you're worse then any idiot riding a wheelie.

My wife was on the back of our bike. I made the decision to take the jackass out before he got us. I could have just kicked him over, like my brother does.

That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. There is no way in hell you leaned over and hit the kill switch on a bike passing you. Seriously, you should think about what you are typing before you post such garbage.

Many if not most cagers think that it's reckless to ride our highways on two wheels, but we think they're wrong. What makes so many of you think that wheelying is so wrong? To many of us it's as simple as eating pie with the right bike, and fun as hell. I wheelie my sportbike, like I wheelied my hotwheels, my skateboard, my BMX.... If I don't do it on crowded streets, what's the freak'n problem?

Anyways, I'm just glad that whenever one harley type starts whipping on sportbikers, or sportbike types start with their chest thumping, that there's always some level headed response to offset the stupidity. I've raced or I've cruised or I've toured with nearly every type of motorcyclist and nearly every brand of motorcycle, and seen the worst of each.

Homefront, I'm sorry for your loss, l can't imagine what it's like to loose a child.

PITA,

Its not wheelies its where you chose to do them.  If, like you suggest one performs them out of harms way of others thats a good common sense application. If it is performed while tooling down the hwy or other public thurough fairs thats the issue.  When ever what ever you're doing accelerates the potential to harm other innocent by standers you're wrong.  I'll defend your right to kill or maim yourself if you want to.

Being on 2 wheels puts one on the losing end of whatever mishap might occur while traversing the highways and by ways.

What happened to common courtesy on the road?

I can only assume you are a "crotchrocketeer". Somehow in my 45+ yrs of riding I feel I have the right and knowledge to call an overpowered racetrack ready bike a "crotchrocket" if I choose. I put in 10 yrs on a hyped up RD400, possibly before you were out of diapers, and appreciate a high performance vehicle that I call a "crotchrocket"!
I understand the sarcasm and your "duck and run" smiley.

Used to be fun back in the day when a kid on the JT1 60 mini enduro or the XR75 or MX 125 to do wheelies.  On a crotch rocket on the road-NAH.

Just check out www.youtube.com and punch in the search "motorcycle crashes" or "motorcycle wheelies" and watch the results.  OUCH.

MY FLHS won't even get the front wheel off the ground anyway's-good thing.

Sportbikes passing me doing wheelie's?

I'm usually too busy watching for the next silver haired Buick driver to pull out right in front of me to notice.  That Suzuki in the next lane doesn't even compare to the SUV that's running up my ass, and I'm always going plenty fast.

Yesterday going from Escondido to Ramona on the 78,(very windy two lane road) two HD's were headed my way and an idiot crotchrocket passes them going over the double yellow, forcing me to move over or there wound have been one less crotcrocket on the road. I flipped him off, I know he saw me, not that it did any good. Wonder if the two HD's caught up with him and kicked his ass.

Wow, what a load of ignorance on both sides of this thread.

I've owned numerous sportbikes, and now ride a Softail. Most of the guys here have never ridden a sportbike, and have these crazy opinions of everyone on them and what they are.

Sportbikes are wonderful, a ton of fun, and when used correctly, much more exiting than any harley. Try riding one on the track, I bet you love it, everyone of you (and yes I have seen MANY men in their 50's and 60's riding sportbikes at the track.

On top of that, most serious sportbikers  are much better technical riders than  most cruiser riders could ever hope to be. The bikes handle better, smoother, and way more stable at high  speeds.

I'd love to know why you all think wheelies are so dangerous? Because its on one wheel? Sure, noone should be wheelying through your lane, but that said, its not the wheelie thats dangerous, but the rider.

I've met more drunk HD riders than I ever have idiot sportbike riders. When I stop for food, it isnt groups of sportbike riders handing around pitchers, its the HD guys, ALWAYS.

I was riding on Saturday doing about 5 over the speed limit in the left lane, overtaking a car who was putt-putting along in the right lane.  There were two guys riding baggers (RK Classics) in front of him.  They saw me coming and one of them immediately moved into the left lane and slowed down to the speed of the car.  So they blocked me from riding past.  And they kept this pace for a while.  Ridiculous.

you guys are funny, I take it your some are the same guys who rode around in the late 60's or '70s with those "choppers" with 20 inch over front ends with no brake and proclaimed how safe they were, while racing from light to light. now with a few years under your belt you ride a bagger with every doo dad and gismo they sell from drink holders to gps systems. now your "joe responsible" and would never do anything unsafe. funny how you look at things with a few years under your belt. And some are newbys to the sport who will believe anything "hog" tells them .you can tell them , theyre the guys who will go for a long [30 minute] ride after cutting their grass and doin all the weekend chores. and they have to wear their biker costume. they took the weekend safety course and the doo rag 101 class, so they don't put it on backwords. whatever happened to doing your own thing? live and let live if some guy wants to wheelie for 10 miles why let it bother you?.,,,

It seems every time I'm riding with a group of friends (we're all in our 50's) we get these a#@wipes on crotchrockets coming at us doing a wheelie, or hang in the left lane close to us riding a wheelie. They are making it very dangerous on the roads for us. The next time, we may have to take care of that little problem. I don't need some idiot taking me, my wife and friends down if they lose control and come down among us. It's getting worse; every time we ride lately, someone shows how stupid he is. What do you all think? As we said in the Army, police your own ranks. Ride safe everyone; that means you too; crotchrocket riders! Jr.

Those who know themselves walk tranquil and serene in the storm of life.
People with serious self esteem problems try to compensate however they can, usually doing stupid things.
As Dante Alighieri said "let us not talk of them, but look and pass."

I used to walk wheelies down the HWY as well... not so much on it now with all the work it has into it... but still, not like the people that i piss off can do much, #1 there is no way they can catch me, if they do... ha ha ha well...

I've seen a few of these "idiots" out on the road. I actually think its pretty sweet what some of them can do. I've also driven a car behind a few so we could get 2 mile wheelies on film. Maybe its just because I'm only 22, but it doesn't bother me what others do. And I sure as hell am not gonna be a fuggin dumb a$$, and purposely try to make them wreck. As far as I'm concerned, these assailants can ride on as many wheels as they want.

I mind my own business, and that's exactly why I bother: because I could be the poor sod he crashes into, that's why.
You're not alone on the road, and you should remember that freedom means responisbility.  Without the latter, you are not entitled to the first.
I believe everybody is free to jeopardize his own health as he likes. But my health is another thing entirely.
Think about being on the receiving end of such an idiot, then imagine how you'd react (provided you're still alive).
I've been there, done that and got the f..ing t-shirt.  It's not nice, believe me, even when you were sensible enough to compensate for the dork's own idiocy and nobody gets really hurt.

I don't want to preach to anybody.  I'm not in a position to do so.  Just want to point out that's not just a matter of one's own safety: there's other people's health at stake, too.

PS: I ride with friends who own a Ducati Desmo2, a Yamaha R1, a Suzuki GSXR 750, and a HD Sportster XL 1200.  So  have nothing against crotch rockets.  I call them crotch rockets, because it's funny and call my bike an agricultural implement for the same reason.
Judge not.
Ride safe.

I love anyone that rides a motorcycle be it a HD or a sportbike and im pretty envious of the tricks those guys do on the sportbikes and i think its great but i also feel racetracks were built for a reason..If im scootin down the road and a group of sportbikers come up on me doin 90 mph on one wheel i say a prayer...
