http://www.todaystmj4.com/news/local/19040484.html motorcyclist's Legs Amputated by Crash GREENFIELD - A 33-year-old Milwaukee man lost both of his legs in a high-speed motorcycle accident Friday night. Police said the crash happened at 10 p.m. in the 7600 block of West Forest Home Avenue. Investigators said the man was westbound on Forest Home at a high rate of speed when he lost control, struck the median and was ejected from the motorcycle. As the victim flew through the air, his body struck a traffic sign and both of his legs were amputated. Greenfield paramedics transported then man to Froedtert Memorial Hospital in Wauwatosa where he is being treated. Police are not releasing the man's name pending notification of all family members. Alcohol does not appear to be involved in the crash, according to investigators. The victim did not have a valid motorcycle license.

I'm not slamming anybody or anything, but I am curious about the age and riding experience of the guys who post this kind of stuff. I'm Old Skool and back in the day, we just didn't discuss stuff like this. Oh, we knew it happened and we knew it could happen to us, but riding was about the positive aspects, in the back of our head we knew the danger was there, but we just didn't talk about it, we were too busy talking about the good stuff. Today I hear "dress for the crash", "plan ahead for the impact", stuff like that. About the only time we discussed this went something like this...... "Hey, did you hear about Bob?" "Yeah, that really sucks don't it?" The gory details just didn't need to be there, a brother got hurt or died, we didn't need a "step by step" or the details. Same with posts or conversations like "I almost got hit today". Man, if I posted every time that happens, I'd have to hire someone to type in my posts, I don't have that much time. Ok, exaggerating some, but just some. But, I'm just curious if it's a culture change because of age, experience or something like that. Maybe it's because of the media and the internet, easier access to details, I don't know. Post it if you want, I know I don't have to read it, in fact, I won't. This is probably my one and only response to these types of posts. I know I take my life into my hands when I get on "Ruby" or "Ol' Black" and I surely don't need to be reminded. Hell, I take my life into my own hands when I drive, mow, walk up the steps, down the steps ............all day, everyday.

Great example SofaDog of a non-compassionate human being, much less a biker. A brother lost both his legs, AZZHOLE, and you respond with that! Perfect example of what I was tring to say. Tell me, oh great one, what if you knew this guy, would he be a victim of stupidity? What if it was you, would you take offense if I asked that? How about my condolences or wondering how his family and friends feel? I've been a biker a long, long time now and I offer assistance to anyone I see that needs it, I don't deny anyone, no exception, but at this point in time, if I knew it was you after that comment, I might wave when I ride by, a nice #1 salute. That's my soap box, boys and girls, we've lost something in the mad rush to see who can put the most bling on their bike and the highest numbers on the dyno sheet.

Man, I couldn't have replied any better, Maybe the "Gore factor" or wanting to post the details is from all the graphic video games out there? De sensitises all the youngsters? (Don't they blame everything on those games now?) But really, like you said, I don't want the gory details. I KNOW a guy who's girlfriend lost her left leg, due to a cager crossing the double yellow on a two lane left hand curve for him, and glansing off the bike, I KNOW crap like that can happen. Stuff like that has touched me in real life,,, so I don't need "Reminders"

That's my soap box, boys and girls, we've lost something in the mad rush to see who can put the most bling on their bike and the highest numbers on the dyno sheet. I agree with the both of you. 1. Was he a victim of his own stupidity? Yes, untrained, unlicensed and doing something he should not have been doing. Normally, the phrase 'a high rate of speed' is only used when it is an extremely high rate of speed and it takes the place of the 'speed was a factor' statement. There was, as far as I can tell, only one person at fault in this incident. 2. Do I feel compasion for this person? Absolutly, he is a human being and his life has forever been changed by a single, momentary decision, made in the blink of an eye. My heart goes out to him and his family, but I also understand that there are concequences for making poor decisions. Some people live a lifetime without having to face them. He was not so lucky, and I can only hope he finds a way to use this experience to benefit others.

Hell, I take my life into my own hands when I drive, mow, walk up the steps, down the steps ............all day, everyday. As to my age I'm 42 years old. I don't have the 800 years experience like most of the seasoned riders. I have been riding for 5 years. I have seen my share of good drivers and bad drivers. When I read this I didn't care how fast he was going. I felt compassion for him.. His life is messed up now or not. maybe he will spend the rest of his life trying to save other people from doing the same thing or worse. All I did was share a tragic episode in a reminder to myself and others to slow down and take our time. Or we won't be around to smell the roses..Instead they will be planted on our graves. If you dont like what I posted thats fine it's your right.. If I saw you on the side of the road it wont matter what you did or who you are I WILL help a brother in need Period. Sofadog, it's obvious that you shouldn't be calling anyone an azzhole. Yes, if I knew this guy, he'd still be a victim of stupidity - how would knowing him change that? And the guy's not a victim, he's a perpetrator - speeding and no license. Also, he's not a biker brother. He has no license. He may be a brother in the sense of humanity, but he's not the most responsible in the group. I don't have to be "oh great one," as you again chose to call someone names, to figure this out. You said "What if it was you, would you take offense if I asked that?" It couldn't be me. I have a license, know how to ride and I don't travel at "a great rate of speed," ever. I could surely have an accident, but It would be a true accident, not a deliberate act of stupidity as this appears to have been. Grow the frick up. End of rant.

RBR - Read before Rant - You're doggin' the wrong guy. SofaDog and I was havin' a bit of discussion, you need to rag on me, he didn't do nothin' to offend you. But, let me enlighten you. Guy was ridin' a motorcycle, no? He didn't have a license so he's not a biker brother? Puhlease! I know guys who have ridden thirty years, never had an endorsement and are serious bikers in every sense of any definition people come up with. No matter how fast he was going, whether he had a license or not, what bike he rides, what color he was, what he's wearing, it's still an accident unless he said, "Hey, check this out, I'm going to go out and lose my legs". There is no such thing as a "true" accident, they are all just accidents. Dude, You talk about growing the frick up, you started ranting to the wrong guy, totally missed the point of my original post and quite frankly, you are one of the people I would most fear, if I had fear. It's always a good idea to follow the posts and at least know what the point of conversation is before you tear it all up. I know, I know, I don't have 2000+ posts, so I guess I'm not a real "forum biker". Sofa dog, we're cool and I apologize for getting your name dragged down into this.

Frog, I agree with your assessment of the "old days" attitude. In my memory, riding was not quite as dangerous in the old days and yes it was not dwelled on. I may have had an epiphany as I slammed into the quarter panel of that VW a few months ago. As my bike is still in parts in the garage being rebuilt I've had time to reflect on my attitude toward riding. I'm not at all sure how I'll feel when I can hop on the chopper and ride. I may or may not be as fearless as I was before, don't know, but will find out. It is possible the media attention to MC accidents has changed. Gory scenes of crashes are everywhere. We rarily saw even a npaper clip in the old days, we just heard about Ol' Whatsisname bit it. Most of the accidents then were rhe result of inexperience and recklessness kinda like today+10.

I've probably got 'roundabout as much riding experience as most seasoned riders on here... (started in '63) I'll say it... he lacked good judgement... which in the old days translates to stupid.... I feel for the guy... but that don't change the facts.... When he gets over the shock of what has happened to him, he'll probably admit it was a stupid thing to do also... Being in the news may make someone out there who is doing the same thing, reconsider their riding habits... Charlie D.

Here's an old saying from my flying days which I've always felt applies to riding as well, " Aviation is not in itself inherently dangerous. But to an even greater degree than even the sea, it is terribly unforgiving of any carelessness, incapacity or neglect. " Anonymous the dude made a mistake, he's paid a high price for it. If there's a bright side, it's that no one else got hurt for his lapse.

That whole thing just sucks. I have a personal philosophy that I try to apply to all aspects of my life (now that I've gotten older)... If you make the right choice regarding the 'little' decisions in life - it makes the 'big' decisions a lot easier. This guy made at least one poor 'little' decision...and that was to ride at an excessive speed. I feel bad for him, and for anyone else that his action has/will impact. He'll pay for that for the rest of his life - and that is a tough bill to pay for, most likely, something he didn't give much thought to at the time. --- Now, with that compassionate shit outta the way. There is an assless gloves/legless chaps joke in here somewhere. Granted, it's in bad taste...But it's here somewhere.

I don't usually go into these threads either. Why should I? I DID lose an arm in a wreck AND had a friend killed on my bike before that so you can't tell me what I already know. I agree that it's just being beaten to death. We all know the risk every time we throw a leg over...If you're going to dwell on it, maybe you need to find another lifestyle.

Gypsy, I don't know about those who witnessed or know of accidents, but I think you will agree there is benefit for those of us who have been seriously injured in venting our feelings in a post. I know that I have dwelled on the particulars of mine and have actually recieved new info I was not aware of myself about mine. I think it has been benefitial for me to adjust to life after my event and the support from the forum has helped a lot. Let's all just heal up and get on with it!

I agree on that Deja, I'm just tired of seeing a new accident thread every day. If it's someone who's actually on the boards, fine but posting every single one you read or hear about is a bit much imho.

You gotta admit the gory stories and gorier videos get lots of hits. There's a morbid fascination with them. I may have a different perspective now, but I just don't want to read or see them just for the hell of it. I feel their hurt physically now and don't need that. I'm sure no war vets get a kick out of watching news clips of our guys getting shot and blown up. I guess each to his own, but I can do without more of that crap.

That's my soap box, boys and girls, we've lost something in the mad rush to see who can put the most bling on their bike and the highest numbers on the dyno sheet. what i got out of sofa Dogs reply was that he was saying this dude was doing stupid chit thats against the law & got hurt, do i feel sorry for him no, he was putting himself & everyone around him in danger, PERIOD! I am a very safe rider, I take great precautions when i ride to make sure im riding the best I can, someone like that makes me PISSED! If he hit a kid or something, youd be singing a different tune.....

But, such is life, if you don't care, well, you don't care. It's always nice to know there are people out there that do have compassion and care. Let's just suppose the guy has a family member that belongs to this forum and they get to read these posts. Nice, real nice!

ORIGINAL: Scatrgunr Here's an old saying from my flying days which I've always felt applies to riding as well, " Aviation is not in itself inherently dangerous. But to an even greater degree than even the sea, it is terribly unforgiving of any carelessness, incapacity or neglect. " Anonymous the dude made a mistake, he's paid a high price for it. If there's a bright side, it's that no one else got hurt for his lapse. Good point. And whatever happened to the idea of learning from the mistakes of others? There are so many correlations between flying and riding that I often see. The best is the "I Learned About Flying From That..." series that I think should be adapted to the motorcycle publications as well. I'm all for learning from your own mistakes, but these two disciplines are the ones I participate in that I'd rather learn from other people's accidents and not my own!

Nice, real nice! campassion has to be earned.......I feel compassion for their family, FOR SURE, its a sad & stupid way to have a disabled son or father or husband...People like that are the people that give bikers a bad name in the 1st place...
