ORIGINAL: 88b If only it were that cheap here ,almost $10 a gallon for gas in England Well, one can only hope. We are an energy hungry nation and the effect of the high cost in fuel is making its mark. Understanding that five years ago it was $1.00 a gal, you can imagine what it’s doing. Well at least you get high grade for the $$.

gas wars? The last gas war I remember one station lowered his price one cent to 16 to beat the station across the street that was selling for 17 cents a gallon. How long ago was that?

How long ago was that? About the same here only a bit higher, was about .32 cents and by the time they got in to full fight it was down around .26 cents

How long ago was that? Too long ago, amigo. Lowest I saw was $0.18 while working in El Monte, Cal. in 1972. Worked at a Texaco and saw the prices go up and down week after week.

I remember .26 gallon wars too and the $5.00 rationing in the late 70's. I noticed today a few gas stations had plastic bags over the regular and mid grade pump handles, forcing you to buy that $4.19 premium. Yes I turned away and drove down the road. I am wondering if they cannot afford to fill the tanks in the ground or if they are just trying to force us to lower their levels of premium.

We had a genuine gas war over in Brighton Colorado. A Kum and Go Station and a Western station, last I heard they were below 3 bucks a gallon. I am not sure if it is still going on, I heard the lines at the pumps were getting long.

The old plastic bag trick, let's see, you don't sell the expensive stuff except to certain people, so, it sits in the ground. Then you put bags over the other 2 pumps and say your out of that type of gas. Now, people are forced to buy the expensive stuff, that you sell very little of, so, you make a nice profit off of some what stale gas, that you bought at a pretty decient price. Then, when that's almost gone, you reopen the other 2 pumps and make even more money since the price has long gone up on that gas!! Free interprise?

I think ya all are under the wrong impression of what gas wars are now. The oil producing nations are gouging the world for the oil it pumps out of the ground for no more than it cost them to do it back in the 70s. We just don't realize it's economic warfare going on and we are getting nuked, so to speak by the escalating price of oil and our government doesn't know what to do about it. We already know what to expect if we go and take the oil fields to lower the price of oil. We hear it everyday from the conspiricy theorist with the "Bush is stealing the oil". The other half of this attack on our nation is the insider help that keeps us from drilling in ANWR, off the east and west coasts and the in the Dakotas to utilize our own natural resources. That's the real "Gas War".

Sometimes inflation is just a snowball effect. Suppose you owned a gas station and at some point gas had cost you $3 per gallon, or $30,000 to buy 10,000 gallons. Maybe you were selling it for $3.25 per gallon, or $32,500 for a $2,500 profit. Now, suppose you worried that the next tanker was going to cost you $3.25 per gallon, or the exact amount you just sold your last shipment for? Where are you going to get the extra $2,500 to fill your tanks? You already spent your gross profit of $2,500 paying the bills and feeding your family. So, common sense says you're already raising your prices to $3.50 per gallon just to re-fill your tanks and still have something left for you. And on it goes with stations, distributors, etc. Speculators buying oil futures are also driving this problem. I sure don't know; maybe oil is just finding it's proper level in this new global economy, but inflation is self-fulfilling sometimes.
