Possibly an early version of the PHASE 3 primary belt drive system. I have a PHASE 3 on my 74 sportster. On my recent rebuild I replaced the bearing and the belt. I'll take somephotos next time I pull my primary cover. I do have documentation if you need a copy.

I have never seen or heard of such a creature. The primary cover has been ground down
around the bolt holes for clearence, and after removel there is a number and a stamp of
what looks like a dude dressed in kung-fu clothes? Yea i could use what ever you got..........

Mine didn't require any case modifications. Unfortunately Phase 3 is no longer around. Bearing suppliers carry parts, and snowmobile belts work fine...you can runn them wet or dry....I run mine wet and keep a spare belt around...I've had to replace a belt once after about 4000 miles.
Hopefully the newer materials are improved. The vibration is significantly reduced, and it's nice not to have any extra steel floating around behind the thin cases. (Just an Opinion )

Where can i find out more about it? Is it a "jerky" ride without compensating sproket?

Hope This Helps...The part number is self explanitory, 117 teeth 8mm 1 1/2" - kevlar (I don't the original belt was kevlar).

I never experienced it to be jerky...This time around I put in a TAMER...seems pretty good but I had to go back and re adjust the clutch cable...new clutch and stuff, maybe everything had to seat itself...works great now though.

You have a Karata belt drive. One of the best on the market, but they aren't well known. I ran one on a '72 XLCH, but it was so ancient the belt was a Gilmer type - square teeth. It was one of the very first ones sold.

Unless you just have to be perfect in the restoration, the belt is out of sight, so why not leave it? Advantages include lighter weight (translating to more power delivered to the rear wheel), quieter, less vibration, and no adjustments.

Disadvantages? I can't think of a single one.

My Karata, even with that Gilmer belt, lasted for about 10 years. It was hooked to a 77" stroker motor, and I regularly hammered on it. The motor made enough power that I could feel and see my frame flex on a hard take-off, and eventually the frame cracked at many of the welds. The belt handled it without a whimper, and that belt was damaged for most of its life. One of the bolts that originally held the chain adjuster backed out, went zinging around the outside of the clutch hub, gouging the aluminum "teeth", and chewing chunks out of the belt "teeth." I safety wired the bolts after that little incident. And that incident occurred at over 135 mph.

If you can't tell, I was mightily pleased with Karata. The original belt finally broke after I sold the bike. It was making a 1/4 mile drag strip pass when it let go.

karata still has the ironhead belt kit on their website.....I'm looking for a belt drive kit for my 71 xlch...karata shows it out of stock but I'm hoping they will offer the kit again. If you decide to seel your set up let me know.....te karata belt is 117 tooth

Ill keep that in mind. I think im gonna run it for now to see if i like it, have instructions coming from
Karata for nada. I could use a new primary cover though.
