I just purchased a 1975 XLCH 1000 not knowing about the AMF buyout. Since this is my first Harley, I am concerned of what I hear about AMF Harleys. Are they as bad as what I hear? On paper, the specs of an old XLCH 1000 appear to out perform the newer sportsters (Excluding the sport models). The bike was rebuilt and appears to run well. Should I be concerned? Are AMF Harleys still true Harleys?
I know that there has been a lot of talk about the AMF Harleys but I would be more concerned about how your bike ran. If it runs good and doesn't give you any problems, then I would say that you got a winner. Enjoy the ride, it's a Harley.

AMF almost put Harley Davidson out of business after previously saving them. They got tired of dealing with Harley and quit putting in any money for research or upgrades. Quality control was nonexistant so all bikes coming from the factory had to be worked on by the dealer just to keep them running to get out the door.
On the other hand, I had a 73 Sporty and a 76 FLH. Once all the bugs were worked out they were both great bikes. You should be OK since obviously since a 20 yr old Sporty is still on the road someone has taken the time to get the kinks out.

Like everybody said, your bike is 20 years old, rebuilt, so most of the so-called AMF "bugs" are long gone. And the next time anybody says something about whether AMF era bikes are "true" Harleys, look at 'em and repeat the following, "You must be a steenkin' RUB, 'cause only know-nothing idjit would ask something like that."
