Starter
Not sure whats up with my starter, though I have an idea. I did a search looking for my symptoms but came up with nothing. Most of the time when I start the engine cold the starter engages OK then after just acouple of seconds it sounds like a grinding noise thencontinuesOK until the engine starts. I don't notice it much when the bike is warm, could it be mystarter drive? My 98 SG only has 10 thousand miles on it. Are they hard to replace?

RE: Starter
Pull off the outer primary cover and examine the starter ring gear ( the gear that is attached to the clutch housing ) for broken teeth or chipped teeth If this is the case replace the ring gear

RE: Starter
Sounds like the starter drive, and it is a pain to replace. You have to pull the outer primary before you can pull the starter.Get a manual or borrow one.Good Luck

When you say starter drive are you referring to the pinion drive gearthat engages the flywheel? My manual shows an overunning clutch inside the starter. Thanks for your input! Tom |
RE: Starter
Yes,the starter drive/overrun clutch, same thing.

Thanks dog155. I am probably going to get into this job after the holiday, hopefully I will have some decent weather to ride in, it's been cold and wet here in the Northeast.[&:]
