I have a 2007 Dyna Street Bob with about 4500 miles on it.  I have had it serviced last at the 1300 mile mark (I was late) by HD, and had crankcase, trans, and primary fluids all changed.  No major problems with the bike, but it runs hot (like all I have read about) and makes the usual whine and clunk from the drivetrain.  I just ordered the Redline Oils Powerpack with 20/50, MTL, and Shockproof, enough to do all three holes and have another crank oil change in reserve.  I plan on doing it soon, (all three) probably at 4500 miles or so.  I bought the service manual, have read up on it (looks easy), have a torque wrench and tools.  Is there any reason NOT to change all three.  I am hoping to cool the bike down a little (especially with the XIEDs I will install around the same time).  Also, I just (200 miles ago) installed a new derby cover and gasket (the solid one, not the OEM rubber, but I still have that one too, in good shape).  Do I need to get a gasket, or can I reinstall if all looks good.  If it doesn't leak after I test ride, I should be good, no?  My biggest challenge is that I live about an hour from the dealer, and never go that way for anything else.  Thanks for reading my book, and I really appreciate any input, especially if you have used the Redline products before.

Yes..........no problem at all changing the Three separate lubricants at that mileage interval..........just did my bagger in March when I pulled it out of hibernation. You will never do a machine (any machine) harm when you exceed the manufacture's frequency recommendations for lubrication.

Personally I would reuse the primary gasket........but I'm no expert. I do know the gasket is NOT under pressure, so it's only sealing the hole.

Good luck (& don't overtorque the drainplugs- they are steel in an aluminum pan)  WD

Awesome, and thanks for the torque tip.  I am hoping with the fluid change and the XIEDs this thing will cool down some, with less stress on the bits and pieces.

If you are using the shockproof heavy trans oil you can go 20,000 miles with it. No need to change it annually if you don't hit the 20k. Change the engine and primary at 5k.  Like stated above use the lower torque value on the drain plugs.

So what is every one's opinion of following the moco recommendation of changing engine oil and filter at 5k but trans oil at 20k and primary at 10k? This after changing all three holes at 1k.

change your fluids everyday if you want to.......no need to.
Engine oil gets contaminated with piston blow-by and what not.
Tranny....change when recommended.    Primary seems to look OK.
Reuse the derby gasket once........seems ok.  Reuse it twice and your torque
to the screws seems to go up.....
Gasket is not too costly....I change mine.

The 1k service is to get all the break-in wear metals out of the system. Other than that the HD recommendation is fine. But I change my engine & primary at 5k or 1 year. Trans 15-20k. But I am leaving the SPH in there until I hit the mileage as there is no reason to change it every year.

I have an 03 with 50000 miles on it, still used the orignal Derby orings and inspection cover gasket. It have had over 15 oil changes, all three holes and no leaks or weeps at the gaskets.
don't waste money on new gaskets unless they are leaking.

My Redline Oils Powerpack should be here tomorrow.  Now I am wondering if I need to replace the drain plugs as well.  With less than 5k on the bike, do I need to replace the drain plugs for the oil pan, trans pan, or primary?  Or do I just need to replace o rings?  How long does the magnetic quality last in a oil drain plug? (I assume that is why they advise replacing it).  Where can I get part numbers for plugs?  I have an indy shop in town, but no HD dealer.  I am thinking of draining all and taking the plugs down there to buy new ones or new o rings.

I have never, in over 30 years of riding, changed a drain plug - absolutely no reason to do so.  I only replace the rubber gaskets on the plugs if they get a rip in them, otherwise I keep reusing them.  Never had a leak or oil drip around the plugs - just torque them to specs.

EVO80,
No problem, I have the service manual and a shiny new torquewrench.  My constant pain is that I am about 30 miles from a HD dealer, so I have to mail order, go to the indy shop, or Auto Zone it.  Can I find acceptable o rings that are not specifically HD if I just match up the size?  I know those things can be important, they brought down a space shuttle, right?  Thanks for the help.

I changed all three on my Heritage at 500, 1000, 2500 with dino oil
then 5000, 10000, 15000, 20000 with Redline

never replaced the derby gasket or the inspection cover gasket, no leaks

replaced the O rings at every change.

always use a torque wrench, its very easy to over torque the plugs and screws

See there, we all do it different!   I've 25k on one bike and 40k on the other and haven't had to replace an O-Ring yet.

You will undoubtedly hurt the dealer's feelings if you don't dump your wallet at his service department.  Other than that, you are home clear.

My 2 cents on the running hot you are experiencing.  I have a 2007 Road King Classic, this is my first Harley and new to riding.  But I treat this bike like one of the racing machine I've driven, BMW's an Porsche's which I have one each in the stable.  when I first heard about the heat problem the 07 and 08 I did some looking around on what to do about it.  First the oil cooler, then someone mentioned stage 1 with the pipes and re-mapping.  I found the XIED's not much into electronic but what I can understand from the theory it will work.

I just change all three fluids on my bike with Amsoil and the filter and re-use all three O-rings and the Pri cover.  O-ring gets damage during installation not while they are install and torque properly.  so I recommend that you lube the o-rings good when you install the plugs.  With my custom housing to recieve a K&N filter and the XIED's my bike runs much cooler.  I don't have a temp guage to verify this, I have my hands to do so.  The way I know it runs cooler is:  before I install them I use the warm air flow to dry my hands as I drive and I can definitely feel the warm air from the engine.  Now that the XIED's are installed when reach down there to dry my hands the air feels cooler than before.  I am searching for a temp guage to verify the temp.  thus far I have not been successful in finding one.  there is a long thread about this things, how cooler the engine with them installed.
