DOG,

Your kiling me with those numbers !

I just finished installing 85" cylinders/CP pistons, ported SE heads, a V-Thunder EVL-5015 cam, V-Thunder lifters and so forth on my 93 FXR. She started right up on the second turnover of the starter. We could tell immediately that the ignition (SE) and carb were not right. I did lean out the carb some which seemed to help, but the engine still surges and hesitates a bit.

The bike is at the dyno facility we use. We are converting over to a Dyna 2000 single fire ignition today and will select an advance curve and re-jet and adjust the S&S Super E. The dyno shopadvised the we do not want to make any dyno pulls until there are at least 500-1000 miles on the bike. He is doing a preliminary setup at this point with an exhaust gas analyzer to allow us to do that.

Can you tell me why the ignition wasn't right? I just overhauled my engine also...new carb (se) new cam (se), new springs, ported heads, new lifters..on and on. My ignition seems to be firing ok but the guy that did most of the work recommended a new ignition.

The single reason to upgrade ignition is to be able to change curves,to take advantage of performance upgrades. You have to decide is it worth the extra money for the small gains.Good Luck!

gjb1952,
We initially fired up on the already installed dual fire SE ignition module and coil. We were instructed by Revolution Performance to heat cycle the engine four times. A heay cycle is bringing the engine up to operating temp and themn let it cool to ambient temp.

After the third heay cycle, we installed the Dyna 2000 single/dual fire ignition module on dual fire at the most conservative curve. This was to make sure (A), the module worked and (B), for break in purposes. The engine ran much better with the SE module installed, so we knew that the Dyna curve was too conservative.

We switched over to single fire and installed the single fire coil on Thursday and chose curve #3, which is a little more agressive, adjusted the S&S Super E an reset the timing.

The bike seems to run fine off idle, but at this point we can not keep an idle setting andit has stalled twiceif I do not constantly stay on the throttle. She has also backfired once and popped back through the exhausts. Pulled the plugs this morning and looks like the carb may be a tad too lean although the main and intermediate jets should not have much of an effect at idle. Once we get this gremlin sorted out she should be good to go.

I built the engine, but had a professional rebuild the carb and do the above listed setup work. I have to wait until after the holiday weekend now to have him take another look at it.
