88" Electra Glide Sport (FLHS)-What Oil?

I bought a nice 88" Electra Glide Sport from the Original Owner and want to do an oil change here in my garage. Never changed the oil in an older EVO.

I think he siad he always used HD Oil-20-50wt. Should I stick with that or change over to what???? Oil filter????

Any tips on changing the oil on this bike??? I have both the orig. parts and service manuals as well.

I think the part number for the black OEM oil filter 63805-80A and HD 20-50 oil is fine. Oil is like a religion to some and some brands have a lot of true believers that will insist it is the only way to save your engine. Some do recommend you don't use synthetic in older engines as it tends to show more leaks.

I am currently using a Drag Specialist oil filter Manufacturer Part #: DS275141 (Part# H30243 Black Long Magnetic Ring Oil Filter ) and Bardahl American Classic Engine Oil 20x50 (Dennis Kirk Part #: 305393) I always had a mess when I changed oil so I switched to using a vacuum pump to suck the oil out of the tank every 2500 miles and I change the filter every 5000 miles. It is more work pumping the vacuum pump but a lot less to clean up afterwards. I do like to scratch the mileage on the oil filter so I don't forget when it was changed, as it is up behind the transmission, no one usually see it but me. Dennis Kirk is fast and has free shipping over $100.00 so I purchased a couple cases of oil on sale and a few extra oil filters a few weeks ago.

I have a 92 FLHS and it has had nothing but Amsoil 20-50 in primary,tranny and engine since 10,000 miles (currently at 22,000)

Older EVOs are notorious for the lower jugs seeping/leaking so if and when this happens I would highly reccomend the Hayden oil fix.

I switched over to James metal gaskets when I had a seep last year ( I didnt know about Haydens then but will be installing the oilfix next time it starts to seep) and everthing is tight as a drum.

Oil is a kinda touchy subject sometimes but looking at the data I would suggest Mobil 1 or Amsoil none the less.

Thanks good info so far-Appreciate the goodrepsonses.

So far the bike runs very clean, very very little seepage from underneath-sometimes a drop or two but tight.

I have the james gaskets on there per the orig. owner telling me so.

I may take her up to a good indy HD shop to change the oil-get it right and not deal with a mess...what should they look for and cover while doing it?
Just curious-what do you think they would charge for this effort-ballpark? Of course, I can call and ask before hand.

I do like to do some work myself so on the other hand I may just go for it and do it. We'll see.

My local Indy (Mikes Custom American Cycles, Goodview VA) Charges $50 and hour. a great deal when comparing the price against the Stealers and besides He knows and rides an EVO and Shovel.. The stealer doesnt seem to want to work on anything but a twinkie

What oil and what filter are almost like what religion.

I've done a few oil changes on my bike in the last 22 years and 75K miles. I generally use HD 20W50, but have Mobile 1 VTwin in right now. For filters, I use Genuine Toyota filters bought from the Toyota dealer for a 22R motor, as found in a 1986 Truck, for example. They are black, under five dollars and I trust Toyota a whole lot more than the Fung Ha Wong Filter Company of China or whereever the chrome filters supposedly for HD's come from. Some of the Toyota filters are even made in the US.

I cut a piece of cardboard, fold it some and wedge it under the drain hole and over the exhaust pipe to keep (most of) the oil off the pipe. Doing your own oil change is a good way to get to know your bike.

About the only other advice I can give you is try to keep it all HD when you need something. A lot of aftermarket stuff is good, some is very good, and a lot of it is crap. For most of it, I don't know which is good and which is not. In general, Genuine HD is at least good, like clutches, starters, electrical stuff, etc.

I run HD 20w50 in the motor, HD primary fluid and Redline shockproof heavy in the trans. Changing all three at the same time is a good idea, especially if you got the bike from someone else (more so if the dumbass glued the derby cover on lol). Changing the oil is not that hard, just makefunnelsout of alum. foil or cardboard to keep the oils off the bike.

I rode a 91 flhs for years and I ran redline 20-50 in it amsoil in the tranny and Hd in the primary. that is the combination I will be going back to with my 97 ultra. I do all my ownfluids. the bikes are so easy. I liked where the filter was on the 91 muchmore than up front on the newer bikes. less mess.
