Greetings,

Newb here w/a question,

I'm looking at buying a VROD and I know of one I'm interested in but have been told that the owner does not always use the clutch to shift?  Is the VROD designed in this way so you do not have to use the clutch or is this owner not to smart.   I have been reading that the VROD is a very reliable/durable bike but I don't want to buy it if this guy is screwing up the clutch.

peace,

When I was looking at the bike I bought the seller told me the same thing. I have been using the clutch. Hoipefully somebody gives a good answer for both of us.

Almost every bike ever made can be shifted without using the clutch. On the surface I'd think there is nothing wrong but I'd have to see/hear/ride the bike to know for sure.

yodasuncle - The gears in the V-Rod tranny will let you shift without the clutch however, you can damage shifter pawls/fingers if you mess up shifting.  I would suggest that you do what I'm doing with my V-Rod and invest in Pingels electric shift kit.  It allows shifting without the clutch by momentarily cutting the power (milliseconds) while shifting.  I just installed the Trask turbo on the bike and the Pingel is next on my list to purchase.  I have shifted my bike without the clutch but not many times.

You can speed-shft a '68 GMC pickup if you know what you are doing.

A lot of vrod owners will shift both up and down without the clutch. The bike is made to handle it. You can get an EFM racing clutch that allows you to shift with no clutch. In fact the clutch is deactivated with this racing mod lock clutch. Gives a whole different meaning to speed and shifting.

I use the clutch, but motorcycle clutches are different that cars... and they can all be shifted without clutching... but you either need the cltuch or to drop power, especially under heavy load.

Even on the dragstrip I feather it in a little, for me it's faster than dropping power and dealing with mashing it into gear.

I would like an auto-shift at some point for the track, but I never got the appeal of not using the clutch in general.
