First the story, My daughter just graduated with a elementary education degree and applied a our area schools, one in particular was her "dream Job" of replacing her kindergarten teacher who is retiring this year, she went through the interview process last week and today while she was at her student teaching position she received a voice mail on her cell phone from the district administrator telling he she did not get the job, needless to say she is heartbroken, but what bothers me is the voice mail on the cell phone.                                                                                                                              Now the Question Am I wrong to assume that something like this should be handled by a letter or a message saying " this is Mr. So and so can you give me a call at your earliest convenience" ?

Is it possible they tried to give  your daughter a courtesy call based on her having past school ties and they just did not connect? Perhaps your daughter and everyone else will recieie letters in the mail?  BUT... I do agree, voice mail is an in appropriate, rude unprofessional way of notifying someone. Regrets for your daughter, she will do fine after this incident. If nothing else she will know how to communicate much better than the school did.

They should have sent a formal letter, that's how professional organizations do things.  If they wanted to handle it over the phone they should have left a message asking her to call them back without saying anything else.  Etiquette seems to be a thing of the past these days.

A letter or personal phone call would be great, but she should be glad they even bothered to let her know.

Yeah leaving a message on a Cell Phone is pretty tacky. I had an interview for an IT job 2 weeks ago and all he talked about was proper communication, letting people know. Then he never called me or sent a letter saying he wnet with someone else. PUNK!

He did tell me that I had more exp then he did...........maybe that had something to do with it.

Tell your Daughter that everything happens for a reason and this just means it wasn't meant to be because something better is planned for her!

Unfortunately new teachers frequently get stuck in the ghetto schools for a while.

+1
The wife flew down to Dallas for an interview/audition they talked her up like she was THE one they wanted to hire, etc etc.  about 3 days after she got back, and no word from Dallas, she got a call from a company in town to offer her a poistion because the person leaving was going to Dallas to take the opening for which my wife interviewed.  Sadly the position in town was about 10 steps backward.

So yeah, she's lucky she got a response.  Doesn't make it right, but people seem to have forgotten common courtesy.

I'd just be thrilled that a school administrator could spell.

I would not be bothered by a message on my cell phone.  It says the same thing as the letter.  And maybe she will also receive a letter.  Sometimes reviewers will call and let you know because people are anxious to know, then they follow up with a letter.  Sorry she didn't get that one.  Maybe she will get something much better!

My oldest daughter had straight A's in high school but did not get into Hofstra (45k per year) because they said her gpa was high enough. My point is that letter to my kid came on aform letter.
Cost 75.00 to submit an application. Seems the least they could do is send a handwritten rejection letter

Sorry, but I have to disagree with you guys on this one.  After an interview, it is the responsibility of the person applying for the job to follow up with a courtesy "Thank You" note, not the other way around.  I have posted jobs where I've received dozens and dozens of resumes, weeded through them to interview those who qualified.  If I am already short staffed, it's not realistic for me to take the time to send a rejection letter to everyone who didn't get hired.

It was nice that they called and if she had answered the phone, they would have told her she didn't get the job.  But, she didn't, so they left the voicemail and moved on to all of the other people they were calling.

A voice mail wouldn't bother me much. The fact that it was on her cell is not a big deal. Many folks don't have a land line anymore. My guess the school will send her a letter as well. They were probably just trying to give her the courtesy of a phone call.

On the other hand if I was trying to get a job, and I wasn't the one selected I wouldn't want to speak with them anyway. I can be bitter like that.

Best of luck to your daughter. Early education is one of the most important jobs a person can do.
