Today I was riding around the Omaha Ne & Council Bluffs Iowa area.

At one point, I was on Interstate 80 in the center lane. Two ladies on my left in two different cars on cell phones. One lady on my right, guess, on a cell phone. I was surrounded at that point by three women on cell phones. Then I sped up to get away from them and see another lady on a cell phone.

I started counting the people on cell phones. Yes, I counted 14 women and 1 man on cell phones today.

Where is the law to ban these things while driving.

This has been an unscientific survey.....but I do have my opinions.

I cant wait till July 1st here in California our law becomes enforceable it wont do much for the distraction issue however they wont have their hand with a cell phone in it blocking their left side peripheral vision.

Mack,
I also passionately hate cell phone talkers/drivers; however, anti cell phone laws are not the answer...

You see, here in CT, use of hand held cell phones by drivers is strictly prohibited. It's posted all over the interstate. Clear as day right? The problem is no one got the memo! Every day, I see dozens and dozens of people whom which the law does not apply! I tell you - it was such a waste of time and tax dollars for the state congress to write and pass that law. Blatant disregard for not only the law, but the safety of other drivers around them, some of which have their own families IN THEIR CAR! What is so damn important that simply cannot possibly wait until you reach your destination? They have no shame in doing it either. It infuriates me.

Anyone else care to rant?

Add me to this list of anti-Moron bikers.  Cell phones are the worst thing to ever happen to us.  It chaps me so badly that I just have to force myself not to pay attention to what the freak inside the cage is doing.  If I so much as lay eyes on some idiot yapping away, I can actually feel my blood pressure shoot up...and I sure don't need that.

Just because they can enforce it doesn't mean they will.
Come drive through Connecticut - see how well prohibiting cell phone use stops people from talking on their cell phones.

Sorry, guys - but ah have no choice but ta answer mah phone 24/7.  I don't chit-chat on it, an' it takes a back seat ta the driving at hand (I make no bones w/folks when ah'm on the road - gimme the important info, an' ah'll call back later when ah'm off the road) - but when it rings, ah gotta answer, because we do a lot of Medical Device type systems - an' if something major is happenin', they gotta be able ta reach me.  If ah git in an accident 'cuz ah'm distracted by the phone - then hammer me, but because OTHERS can't walk an' chew gum, don't stop ME.

Besides....y'know, motorcycles roaring up and down the road w/their load pipes are a distraction, too - how can they hear with the loud exhaust?  And the lack of a helmet makes 'em a LOT more likely to be distracted 'cuz they git struck by debris....

NEVER invite/support an additional law that limits ANYONE's rights - yours WILL be next!

I try getting their attention, when in my car, then I make like I'm blabbing on my cell phone.. then I give them the Massachusetts single finger salute.

It makes me feel better and is cheaper than therapy.

Add one for for the women - yup you guessed it!! Got rear ended a week ago today on my 07 Ultra. sitting at a light in Houston TX minding my own business - then BANG. Thought at first I dumped the clutch, then realized after looking in my mirrors that i had just been hit. The lady (could call her something else, but not in this site!!) jumped out of the car right away and started apologizing. She told me all she did was reach down to answer her phone....H-E-L-L-O-!!!! I reminded her what her job was while driving - as nicely as possible. Fortunatly she had good insurance and the company is working with me well. Came to my house and wrote a check for the Dealer's estimate of 900.00.
But that still does not excuse the poor behavoir and disregard for others on the road while on the cell phone. I say hang up and drive!!!!

You got that right Tex!  Back 30 years ago here in Colorado the State Motorcycle Dealers Assn. was supporting a Daytime headlight law.  They laughed at me when our Coloradans Against Helmet Laws opposed it.  We beat it at the Legislature.  2 years later we got the helmet law repealed.  Then the President of the Dealers Assn. tried to get me to lobby for his causes.  Dirt bikers were losing ground and they couldn't stop it.  He eventually lost his business.  He didn't laugh anymore.  We need fewer laws and more common sense.

If someone drives erratically while on a cell or lighting a cigarette, or grabbing at his girlfriend, it's careless driving.  We got laws on the books already!  If they can do it safely why bother them.

I'm not one for laws. I just don't like people yapping on the phone while driving. I almost got hit head on by some bozo teenage boy texting while driving. I was in my car and wound up in someone's front yard.

Maybe have an algorithm in cell phones that works with GPS. If the cell phone is moving at a certain rate of speed, you can't yap on it.

If one receives a call, like a doc. You get the call and you can pull over.....I don't have the answer...I just don't like seeing all the people more interested in their calls than driving their vehicle. Maybe because I'm riding a scooter I'm more aware.

Today, this one young girl's speed probably varied from 55 - 70. I passed her and she pass me a couple of times. That phone was stuck to her ear with her left hand.

I'd like to see some sort of a device added to cell phones that cuts them off as soon as the ignition switch is turned on in ANY vehicle! The National Transportation Safety Board says talking on a cell phone while driving leaves you as impaired as being legally drunk behind the wheel! If the agency charged with our highway safety says cell phones and driving don't mix, why don't we have enforceable laws on the books to stop it? I'd like to see laws passed prohibiting their use in a moving vehicle with fines STARTING at 1K for first offense, 15% of the fine going to the LEO writing the ticket so it would be vigorously enforced, and a PERMANENT loss of driving privileges for a second offense. The latest report by the NTSB states cell phones ARE the number 1 cause of on highway accidents in the USA and it's long past time it stops.

Oh, horse apples!  Folks, when are ya'll gonna realize that thar's ALWAYS someone tryin' to CONTROL us?!??  Every time they manage ta demonize ONE thing 'nuff ta git it outlawed, they go after another.

Lemme give ya a good case in point - drinkin' an' drivin'.  Say a feller has been out at his farm/ranch workin' on fences over the weekend.  Rather than toss cans in the pasture, he tosses 'em in the truck.  The next mornin', he gits up an' heads into town for sumthin', an' is pulled over.  Under Texas law, those cans will get him arrested/charged under the "open container" law.  It's ILLEGAL to have ANY open alcoholic beverage container in ANY motorized vehicle on the roadway!!!  An' that half-empty bottle of expensive booze yer gonna take to a party?  Best hope ya don't git stopped on the road with it - even if ya ain't had a DROP of it.

Folks, if they do sumthin' wrong make 'em pay for it - until then INSIST they be left alone - or YOU might be next!

It's a bunch of horsecrap.
We have laws against meth, crack, guns, etc, etc., and for all the good they do,
may as well eat crap and bark at the moon.
You can't tell me that more laws are going to make any difference.

Agree with you 100%
Come to where I live the local police are not allowed to write tickets to the residents of Lakewood. The town is controlled by one group. I have instructed my wife if she is stopped for any reason by town police the first thing she is to say "Why are you stopping me, because I am not a ***?" The only time there are tickets written is when the State Police is in town, wish they were here 24/7.

They will never stop talking on the phone.... just have to carry some nuts or something that will make them hear the noise 7 put the phone down. I ride into Manhattan NYC every day and there's 60% on the phone here . Even a school bus driver one day. Well what I'm saying is ride safe and pick the fights you can win ...

And therein lies the problem.  Common sense left with the populations explosion and the advancement of technology.  Before, people just had the good sense, that good sense didn't come with advanced technology.

Count me in as one who got rear ended by a woman talking on a cell phone, smoking a cigarette, reaching for her drink.  Not on the bike, but the car.

Forcryingoutloud. Emergency vehicles have blue tooth phones, and I've even seen some of them pull over to talk.  I see many company vehicles pulled over to talk on cell phones.  And I can always tell when someone up ahead is on a cell phone.  They slow down, weave, never look in their mirrors, don't signal to turn or switch lanes, and frankly have no freaking idea there is anyone else on the road, let alone around them.

Common sense says get a no hands phone, or pull over.  I won't even answer the cell in my car? Ever.  Even for the business, it can wait until I have either pulled over or have stopped for something.  I didn't even answer it last week when I knew my sister would be calling about the death of her son.  Why endanger others, when I can safely pull over?

I am at my mirrors on the bike constantly looking in the rear.  I've been rear ended twice.  The other time was by teenagers.

It is a personal choice, and I know I have to watch for a lot of distracted people on the road, whatever that distraction may be.  I don't even consider common sense anymore...it's not the majority that have it anymore, so I have to be as defensive as I possibly can.

I need to reach out to the "sparkies" on the forum. The solution to cell phone use on the road would be a personal "scambler" that would cut out phone reception for say a 600 ft radius from your bike. Leaving it on(f'k the FCC) would give you a safety zone where people would lose their connection and hang em up. Won't stop momas from hassling with the kids in back or reaching for purses etc. But it would help.

Ya know, they do sell them little devices that nullify All wireless signals.... and they plug into a cigarette lighter. I say get one,  put it on your bike and ride through town with it.... see how many people hang up when you ride by....

I'm not so sure.  I'd be willing to bet that they'd just be all over the road trying to redial.  Good idea, though.

Since a buddies 18 month-old girl was killed by a cell phone user (that was the only mitigating factor in his driving), I don't use mine while driving. If they want me they'll leave a message and I make a point of stopping shortly thereafter to check on the message.
