so yeah as it says i want to make some exhaust for my 2002 nightrain(88ci Twin cam), i have the welding skills just need a little push.
i see the black coated exhaust and im wondering what that coating is that stands up to all that heat?
and where can i get the flanges and bends as i need for the exhaust?
also, what size thickness and tubing do you recomend for them?
also im new to these new motors, my other bike is a shovel so im used to that, so do you need torque cones for these motors? and no i wont be using any baffles
any other tips that could help me i would apreciate it, thanks guys!
Most of the black exhaust they sell is ceramic coated, you can use a high temp paint but I had my girlfriends ceramic coated and the end result was definately worth it, as far as the bends try to locate a used set of big block headers that's your best as far as differentbends, good luck!
eh, i highly doubt they will, the dealer around here doesnt get much business, i dont think they would throw any away if they had any...
anyone know if i need torque cones?
Zippers sells all the pipe sections and flanges, you want the thickness to be 1/8' (.125). If you want to build a stepped header start off with a 1 3/4' section then to a 1 7/8' section then a 2' section. The first section should be 25% of the total length, the second section should equal 32% and the last section should be 43% of the total length.
Torque cones are like a 'banana in the tail pipe trick'...they are extremely restrictive and have not been used in the performance world for years now, however you would be wise to use some sort of baffle in the 2' section of the pipe for street able low end torque....if this build is for all top end riding (4000 rpm and up) then by all means let the air flow.
As a rule of thumb when building pipes or even looking to buy a set of good performers we look for 'Mean Flow Velocity' to be with in 280 and 300 feet per second (piston speed / 60) x (bore x bore / diameter of pipe x diameter of pipe) = feet per second. When and if you use this formula be sure to use the inside diameter of the pipe not the outside diameter.
