I'm having LASIK surgery on Thursday morning, and I'm wondering how long those of you who have had it were told to stay off your bike?

Okay, I also have to ask, how long did you REALLY stay off the bike?

I had the Lasik a few years ago before I got the riding bug.  I would think that as long as you wore goggles or a full face there would be no riding restrictions but best if you ask your doctor.
You do have to avoid any contact with the eye for about a week as I recall.  Had to wear eye protectors while sleeping.

Other than that it was a breeze.  No discomfort at all except for some light sensitivity on the way home which was probably from the numbing drops.  My wife wasn't a candidate for lasik as her corneas were too thin and she had to have the PRK. She had pretty bad discomfort for about 3 days as if sand was in her eye.

Best money we ever spent.  Good luck with yours

I am going in this morning for Lasik. I didn't ask the doctor on my first visit about riding. I was wondering the same thing. I guess I will find out today.

That was the smartest decision I had ever made so I had it done in 2001 but I don't remember any stipulations regarding riding my bike. The biggest caution that I was given was to stay out of swimming pools for 4 - 6 weeks. The healing process was extremely quick but I did have to sleep with those Spiderman cups on my eyes for the first 2 or 3 nights.

I have a pair of wiley-x with that rubber seal around your eyes and get minimal wind on my actual eyes even while in the 80-90 mph range.

Disclaimer: That was many beers and many years ago so I would call your Doctor

I think it was a week for me, but I stayed off of it for about 2 weeks. A guy I know decided to ride a bit too soon, and the flap that they cut in his eye got blown out of whack and it fugged up his eye pretty bad. I thought about doing the goggle thing, bit my eyes just aren't worth the risk. I suggest listening to your doctor man.

Now that's all I'd need to hear. Stay off the bike for two weeks minimum.

I had mine done on a Thursday and went riding on Saturday. I had no problems but everyone is different.

Had Lasik done last April. I stayed off the bike for 2 weeks. When I started ridind again I wore my full face and sunglasses for a couple of weeks. My eyes were really sensative to sunlight and the ride into work was toward the sun . My eyes would still water up like crazy. It gradually got better and the light sensativity went away.

Best thing I ever did for myself. Wife has it too. I went riding the next day with goggles but ask the Dr. for sure.

I had the monovision done. My dominant (rt) eye is 20/15 for distance, left eye is 20/60 which makes it a bit nearsighted so I can also read etc. Vision between the eyes is additive so I don't notice one eye is a bit blurry, and as a result I don't need reading glasses either.

They can even do that with contacts, too.

Such a deal...

YOu know they cut a half moon and fold the flap back on yer eye, its very important that you ask yer doctor and listen to him so you don't have complications. YOu willl be very light sensitive after you come out for a day or two or three.
You want time to let yer eye heal back right man. You can have halo's and star burst and other problems. I'm still having light glare problems over 7 yrs later.

+1 on the monovision. I also had it done, and I'm glad I did.

That said, the two most important things to be careful of are drying your eyes out due to wind, and halos and glare around lights that could make night riding a real challenge for anywhere from weeks to months.

You can take care of the dry eye part by using a good pair of goggles or sealed sunglasses like Panoptyx or one of the other brands. Also, carry eye drops with you when you ride. If your eyes begin to feel scratchy or itchy due to drying out, the eye drops are a lifesaver.

There is nothing much you can do about the decreased night vision except to try not to ride at night (duh) for as long as the problem lasts. In my case, I still ride at night only as a last resort. Even driving at night is less than optimal, though the problem does improve with time.

Best of luck.

Had the mono too. Monovision that is.   But not everyone can adapt to it and not everyplace will give you the option.

The claim is that LASIK is forever, but I and three other people I know have lost our "perfect" vision and are back to wearing glasses. At first it was nearly perfect, I had "adjustments" done to both, and monovision; but after adjustments my non-dominant eye is my distance eye. Also, almost immediately after surgery I noticed diminished vision in low light situations. Anyone else here less than thrilled with their outcome?

Has lasik done about 8 years ago. Greatest $699 I have spent (Would have been $999, but the company went under before they collected the last $300). Stayed off the bike for about 5-7 days and then wore some of the old Oakley Darth Vader looking shades for a couple weeks after to play it safe. Sorta like the ones pictured below but without the holes in 'em. Had a buddy who wanted a pair for dirt bike ridin, so I used 'em for a couple weeks and sold 'em to him for $20 off. 8 years later and eyes seem to be workin fine.

Alot depends on age.  As you age into the 50's your eyes will change and lasik may only last a few years.  I had mine done at 49 (20-15 result) and by the time I hit 55 it was time for glasses again.

I had mine done, will be two years in late November. As it was winter, I ended up staying off the bike for about three months. When I did start riding again, the only problem I had was night vision, or rather lack of night vision. It was a pain in the a$$ being out after dark on a trip away from home and discovering that. The good news, however, is that I am all over it now and loving it!

My concern right after the procedure was that I coach high school football and was afraid that an errant football, or player, would hit me in the head and jar one of the flaps loose. I think I was told by my doc to wear the 'spider eye' cups on my eyes for at least 30 days, which I did. Was told to wear them while sleeping, which was no big deal. But was also told to cover them with saran wrap and wear them also when in the shower. That was a pain!

I was 41 when it was done and doc told me there was a chance I might still have to wear glasses (my eyes were that bad). He also told me that inevitably, I will have to wear reading glasses as me and my eyes age. I told him that was no big deal as I had been wearing glasses and contacts my whole life. Luckily it took, however, and I have been lovin' it since.

As your eyes age, you can have them touched up.

This is the one place where you want the very best doctor with the very latest equipment. Hang the price.

My wife got the monovision about 8 or 9 years after the original surgery - just did the one eye. That was due to aging and no longer being able to see up close. Works great.

Had it done yesterday and the tech who was giving me my post-op instructions was a real wise guy. I asked him about riding and he said 2 months! I said you gotta be kidding!!! He started laughing and said no one week is fine. Turns out he rides and wanted to see my reaction. They gave me a valium so by the time I saw the Doc I didn't think to ask him. I have my folow-up appt. today so I will find out for sure.
