RE: 1985 FLTC Ignition switch Knob removal
Take the entire dash off, unplug all the wires and set it aside. Remove the large nut that holds the tamper shield. It's a large, fairly thick metal plate that has tabs extending off it that covers the lock lever and has a warning sticker on it. Then you'll have better access to the fork lock mechanism which is the phillips head screw with a spring and lever. (The book shows that picture) Push the lever back and work the screw out of the slot.... and I can't remember what happens next. I had all mine off 3 months ago, but can't remember each step exactly - sorry.
The mentioned "pin" that you pull to release the knob is either on the left or near center (probably left). It's up under the lip of the housing that the dash screws to, and it's hard to see without a flashlight. Remember to push down on the knob before pulling the lock pin. When it all comes apart, you'll see it's fairley simple. And if you're trying to get the actual electrical switch out, there is a nut (like a radio antenna nut) on top off the switch stem. Takes a special socket for it, butI used channel-locks because you'll never see it anyway and it'll come off easy soon as it's broken loose. Then take the 4 bolts out on the sides of the shroud and pick it up to pull the wire plug off.
Hope this is of some help.
