Default Changing transmission oil in 2005 sportster

I want to change the tranny oil but I've never done it before,(myself).Do I really need to take the primary(derby) cover off? I don't want any surprizes that I can't fix.I've read about a spring that is behind the cover and it's difficult to get back in place. The o ring doesn't sound like a problem. Can I just drain the oil and put a quart in the chain window, which seems to be the easy way.The dealer is 400 miles away from me. Some of the guys I talk to here are just backyard mechanics. I don't really trust Themwith my bike. Thanks!
