How important is an oil cooler in the northeast. I have a 79 fx. The cooler on the bike is leaking and I'm trying to decide to replace it or pull it and leave it off.
I took the oil cooler off mine. I did not see a noticable difference. I live in North Florida.

I would guess it depends on how much HOT weather riding you do.
living in I cooler climate {I guess} it may be a good idea if you replace the cooler to have a thermostat incorporated in the cooler for the cooler riding.

Mine Isn't Hooked Up, but i always hook it up before Rallys when i know the bike will be sitting in traffic. I also take my derby cover off so my clutch doesnt heat up (i have a primo belt drive with a dry primary.) Other than that i don't see you having too much issue with over heating as the bike is air cooled.
each bike is a little differant. Mine if it is abou 90 degrees F out then she will want to die at idel. I leave mine hooked up all the time if it cool of cold outI just put a cool beer can kooze around it
That seems acurrate Mine usually runs priitty cool except on a really hott day as you said. I live in upstate New York...at this point i've forgotten that the tempurature rises higher than 75. but soon hopefully.......
