Default 1985 FXSB Low Rider - Tranny & Primary Swap ???'s

Well I'm new here to posting, I have always came here to find answers but I am having trouble with this one.

I am restoring my 85 FXSB Low Rider, the frame is being powdercoated, the heads/cylinders are at diamondheads but I can't find a tranny. This bike comes with a 4 speed kicker and I really want a 5 or 6 speed in it whichever I can make work the best.

Everything I find for a tranny is for 90+ softails. Why is this?? I realize I have the old style primary with the starter solenoid underneath the coil but that's not important as I want an open primary. I am back to the same problem with the open primary because they don't work for my bike either! They will bolt up to the motor.

The primary contains the 2 outer bolts that go to the engine, 2 inner bolts that are tied together that also go to the engine. The tranny has the 2 bolts coming through the primary (nuts are inside the primary) and 2 bolts that go into the tranny from the primary behind the clutch basket.

My theory is that the reason for this is the newer trannys dont work with the older primaries but if you change the primary it would work? It's just a lot of money for trail and error and I was hoping someone had an answer. If anyone does I'd greatly appreciate it, thanks.

What you have is a 4 speed frame, and none of the 5 speeds will fit. There is more to it than just the primary fitting. The only other course is a 5 speed in a 4 speed case, there are a few aftermarket companies that sell them. Using a 5 in a 4, your primary, starter, etc should still fit.
