Default M6 on a 04 sporty HELP!!

Trying to install a M6-XL5-2 on the wifes 04 1200C. The directions state the the tall side of the GUIDE PLATE should go between the the chain and the case (which I take to mean chain and engine). It will not fit that why. I put the primary cover on the bench and still couldn't get the bolt thru the assembly without it being totally cockeyed. If you turnthe guide platearound it goes together fine. But the directions say TALL SIDE BEHIND CHAIN TOWARD CASE in bold letters. Any help would be greatly appreciated
