Default Reloading problems

reloading 9mm for a Ruger P-89......not working

Using 124 gr flatnose bullets
Acurite #5 using 6.2 grains, powder

Length looks good
diameters look good

Results;
feeding problems
weak ejection

seems like there's not enough pressure to cycle the action.

Shot factory rounds and everything works good... very confused.

I am new to reloading so I'm not sure what I am doing wrong ?????? Help !

Don't have a manual in front of me right now, but I'm guessing your load is too light. If you don't have enough pressure you will not get the slide to slam back fast or hard enough to make the gun function properly. If you really like the load you might have to get a little weaker slide spring.

What kind of crimp does your dies have? Roll or taper and is it fairly tight. Check the diameter at the end of the brass with a caliper. A weak crimp could cause both of your symptoms.

Good Luck

I pulled out one of my manuals and your load is on the upper side of mid range for a 124 gr 9mm bullet. It ought to work fine. Don't roll crimp the reloaded round. A slight taper crimp is what I use (just enough to remove the bell that's made to insert a bullet into the case). If you bell your cases and don't remove the bell, that may cause feeding problems.

I've never used AA#5, but I have used Unique, Bullseye and Power Pistol to load 115 gr, 124 gr and 147 gr bullets in 9mm. Have never had a problem with FTE. I shoot my reloads in both a Kel-Tec PF9 and a Glock 27, with 9mm drop-in conversion barrel - and have had no problems.

Some other thoughts:

If everything looks okay, then check your scale and your powder measure. It's possible that, although you think you're dropping 6.2 g of powder, you may really be dropping a lot less. Drop a few charges and weigh them. I have two scales I use to double check my charge (A Dillon manual balance beam and an RCBS 750 Electronic one) - (three, if I count the little Franklin Arsenal Electronic one I bought from MidwayUSA when they were on sale - though I rarely use it.)

How old is your powder? If it's something you got from a freind, and he/she had it for ages, then it may be time to buy some fresh powder.

Is it stored in the original container - don't leave it in the powder drop for extended periods of time - when you're not reloading, put it back in the original (usually black or brown) container - light breaks powder down.

Do you tumble your loaded rounds? Some folks do, I don't. I've read that it may break down the coating on the powder inside the case and produce undesired effects.

I hope I haven't insulted you intelligence, but I said you were a new reloader, I' ve reloading for a LONG time, but had a lot of help in the beginning.

Hack.
