Default '76 Sporty Oil Flood

I have an original 1976 Sportster that has never been taken apart. After about 2min of riding oil is gushing out of the left side access plug used for Front Chain Adjustment. When I pull that plug out the o-ring is in great shape and I see it has a fiber packing inside with a small (1/8") hole through the plug. This hole is where the oil is freely flowing out of. I think I can rule out too much oil in the tank as it was almost empty or would have been soon had I kept riding. It seems to me that the crank case is not able to breath so oil/air is forced out any hole it can find as the pressure builds. The crank case breather tube on the right side of the engine does not leak any oil. Can I rule out the rotary breather valve since the engine has never been taken apart? Any help on this would be appreciated as my driveway is now covered in speedy dry (aka kitty litter).

Thanks,
Steve

Default RE: '76 Sporty Oil Flood

I had a 75 sportster that when parked for a week or two..............the oil in the oil tank would find it's way to the primary case, overfilling it to the point that oil would come out of that plug. The problem was a check vavle plug located in the block just behind the primary chain. When i cut the old plug open to see why it was leaking,I found a small speck of gasket sealer in the valve flap. I installed a new plug and that solved the problem. Maybe it's worth a shot for you to change that checkvalve, I hope this helps

Thanks for the reply. Where is that check valve? Is it the one in the oil pump at the bottom of the engine or is it a different one. Do I need to crack the engine case to get to it? Thanks, Steve

........Take the primary cover off and it will be behind the chain ,on the block. It looks like a hex head pipe plug with a small hole in the center
