Default quick help neededtorque spec

i have an 81 roadster(everything should be the same as a sportster)can someone tell me the torque spec for the 6 bolts that holds the clutch plate on? and also for the allen bolts that holds the primary cover on?also the large nut that holds the primary on as well...when i took that off it was on very loose...i have no clue what it even is suppose to be for.anyway help if you can.thanks

Why don't you have a manual?&nbsp\\;\\\\\\; I try to help people with real problems, not simple **** you can find in the manual or with a search of the forum. You didn't get an answer in 2 hours so forget it? lol.

Then why did you take that stuff off? I'm not trying to talk down to you, just trying to understand why people have old bikes without a clue. It seems to me 90% of the questions in here can be answered by the shop manual or a forum search, or google. If you don't have a HD shop manual (again, google) then get one, instead of some chrome doo-dad that looks cool. If you guess at torques because you're in a hurry, you get what you deserve. * hint* aluminum threads strip out really easy.

ive got a haynes manual.it did not show the all the torque info i needed.i realized later it did actaully show the casing torque....in inch lbs....i misunderstood and thought foot lbs and knew that it was wrong as i have noticed a couple of other things wrong in that book.-my stupid mistake.no i did not tighten them 100 or whatever ft lbs.the torque of the clutch plate i called a harley shop and a tech gave me the info for it.
&nbsp\\;the computer i was using was in a non ac/non fan room here in texas....i was drenched with sweat....watching the hit counter rise with no info.in the posting it said...need help quick...i thought it would be a simple question as well.no i did not guess...kinda wanted too under the circumstances but i mostly just wanted any good samaritan out there not to go to any trouble as i wouldnt be online anytime soon to check it out.
&nbsp\\;i took it apart to replace the clutch...not to just f with it.do you think i didnt try and find the info anywhere else????? type in torque and harley and you dont get torque specs on bolts.you can read 0 to 60 times all day though.yeah i know i am sure you could find it quickly...well i cant.you win.
&nbsp\\;my rant is the same in a car forum i belong to....theres always people who say buy a fact manual...check the archives because that is an easy question.....it would have been easier to not reply or to just give the answer with a reminder of the archives.what happens is when someone does check the archives all they get is "check the archives" as an answer.-btw chrome doo dads????what makes you think i buy chrome doo dads????you seriously dont know me.

&nbsp\\;To tell you the truth, I have never seen any general torque values (charts) given in any of the factory manuals for the ironhead vintage machines. The newer Twincam 88 books do give torque specs, but not on the old Sportsters. That was most likely the reason you had little response to your inquiry.

&nbsp\\;Speaking only for myself, I saw your first post and thought....'I cannot answer that one' so I passed on a reply. I am sure it was the same with others.

&nbsp\\;You can use any torque value given for on a chart for the same size bolt that you have on the machine. And I recommend you use a chart for a strength 5 bolt, as that is what most of them will be.

But lets jump back to your original request for a moment.
&nbsp\\;If you had asked...What is the torque for the head bolts? Then you would have received a reply from me stating the torque is 65 ft lbs on each bolt.
&nbsp\\;In other words, the Harley manual gives a torque value on a bolt when it considers the value inportant. head bolts fall under that class. Clutch studs do not. The values are given in the text under the repair procedure for the area you are working in.

The Haynes manual could have some things in it that are incorrect.
&nbsp\\;The HD factory manual certainly has some errors in it as well, and these I have highlighted in my manual long ago.

&nbsp\\;pinion -thanks again.with every post i respect you more.
&nbsp\\;i have no problem with someone not answering me...i was frustrated when i asked the question,and it showed,&nbsp\\;and if someone doesnt know the answer then they dont know the answer..no problem.
&nbsp\\;i never did torque the casing down as my torque wrench didnt go that low.i will get another soon/someday.i did however mark the bolts before i took it apart and i brought it back up to that point..and it felt about right as well.i will doublecheck when i get a smaller torque wrench but i doubt it will need to be any tighter.the last "mechanic" that took it apart used a gasket and about 5lbs of silicone.........

Going back to your original post:
&nbsp\\;Just as long as the clutch nuts are good and snug you will have no problem. They really do not require torque down, just snugged up.

Ditto for the primary screws. Snug them down in a cross hatch pattern. make about two rounds&nbsp\\; around the pattern to get them snug, tightening each a small amount and moving to the next screw on the opposite side.

&nbsp\\;The large nut on the clutch that was loose (?) If you are referring to the center nut on the plate (13/16 wrench size I think), then this needs to be snug tight also, but be sure you understand how to adjust the clutch ramp before you tighten this nut down.
&nbsp\\;If you are not familiar with that exercise, check back in and we can help you with that.
&nbsp\\;It is important to do it correctly.

&nbsp\\;I am a bit out of my element on something as new as a 1981, but we can find the correct procedure if it differs from a 1974 and earlier machine.........pg

yeah i tightened the primary like you world a head on a car.the center bolt i was confused about as it didnt seemed to be tightened much at all...less than the outer allenheads were.it had a spacer about 1' and was tightened down with something that looked like an aftermarket lugnut.i tightened it to the marking i had made previous.i dont know how to tell if its correct....i dont know what you mean by the clutch ramp.
