You are probably right. If you look inside, both (return and vent) terminate at the top, beside each other. One being bent down though. it might be the return, but go figure...
I have also read, that instead of removing the return hose, one can simply run it without the filter.
After collecting 1 qrt, stop the engine, install the filter and add 1 qrt. It is probably way messier though...
