Default 08 First quarter sales -13%

They said in the news foreign sales were up 17%.&nbsp\\; Don't know what percentage of total production goes overseas but the economy is definately taking a bite&nbsp\\; of the profits.&nbsp\\; I have been seeing alot of advertising on television that was not present in the past.&nbsp\\; Sales persons locally seem to come and go frequently in my area.&nbsp\\; Got to give them credit........ the dealership buildings are very stylish and attractive. Hope the used prices hang in there.

From the Patriot-News here in PA:

[/align] Sunday, April 20, 2008

Harley-Davidson Inc. announced Thursday that it would cut about 370 unionized jobs and 360 administrative jobs as a result of poor sales trends in the U.S. motorcycle market. About 300 of those layoffs will occur at the motorcycle maker's plant in Springettsbury Twp., York County. Harley-Davidson said its U.S. retail sales were down 12.8 percent in the first quarter. For the year, it said it would reduce shipments by 23,000 to 27,000 motorcycles. The company also said it expects earnings to drop 15 percent to 20 percent this year.

And the dealer I bought from just disconnected their 800 number.&nbsp\\; If you want to talk to 'em, you pay for it.&nbsp\\; They're still a good dealer, but times are tough.

In general, IME:

People buying MC's for the better mileage are buying 250-750cc, maybe 1100cc tops, bikes.

People buying MC's for fuel mileage ain't Harley's demographic, those folks are not the ones who are going to pony up&nbsp\\; the $$ for an HD (new or used) when they can buy a metric (new or used) for so much cheaper.&nbsp\\; JM2CW....

Thats exactly right. Tired of all these BS artists. They should all go back&nbsp\\;and ride their Honda's and quit hanging out on the Harley forum pretending.
