Default valve stem seals???

I see pinion is around.&nbsp\\; I tried this question before but didn't hear from anyone.&nbsp\\; Did the 71 ironhead come with valve stem seals?&nbsp\\; My manual does not show seals and most aftermarket kits indicate the guide will need to be machined.&nbsp\\; Do ironheads need valve stem seals?

Default RE: valve stem seals???

Yep, I have returned from the wilds of cruising Alaska.
The 1971 came with no guide seals that I know of. I have never used seals on my '71. In my bike life it has had new guides installed 3 times. Each time I did this as I did an engine rebuild. Once was a top end only and twice a complete rebuild.
Sometimes shops will knurl the guides as a temporary way of controlling oil seepage but it is just a very temporary fix. Oil soons begins to leak down the valve stems.
&nbsp\\;If it were me and I had oil leaks I would just have new guides installed and do a valve job at the same time..........pg

I've got classic leak down on start up.&nbsp\\; It puffs smoke when I wick the throttle when cold then nothing once it is warm.&nbsp\\; They guy I bought it from just had the valves (stainless) and guides done 200 miles ago.&nbsp\\; I know he did the work as I have the original valves and guides.&nbsp\\; The bike sat in a farm field for 2 years howver before I saved it and brought it back to life....
