Default Front cylinder misfiring ... REPAIRED!!!!

*********
&nbsp\\;
I rode it back to my friends house for him to take another look at it. It ran rough all the way to his house, about 35 miles. We went over everything it had been doing, and over suggestions from people here on hdforums. Pat cranked up my&nbsp\\;bike, listenening to it while revving it some. Then he got a can of WD40 and sprayed it on the intake manifold where it attached to the cylinders. The rpms instantly went up, and&nbsp\\; the exhaust pipe on the front cylinder smoked like hell.
&nbsp\\;
SHAZAMMMMM!&nbsp\\; Burnt WD40 STINKS~~!
&nbsp\\;
Luckily the local HD dealer stays open till 8 pm on Thursday night. Less than 10 bucks for intake manifold gaskets, a couple hours work, and I was on the road and running smooth again!

This is a long post, but I think necessary for the problem I have. I hope someone here can tell me what the problem is.

I’ve got a problem with my ’93 Sporster where the front cylinder is not firing. Not all the time though as it comes and goes.

I started it up about a week ago and it was running real rough. Checking the exhaust I found the front cylinder wasn’t firing.

I trailered it to a friend of mine. Checking the plugs, they looked OK, but we put in some new ones anyway. Before putting in the plugs, he put a tester on the plugs and I turned over the motor. Both plugs were firing.

We took the wires off to check them. I’ve had this bike since ’98 and have never done anything to the plug wires. The wires were braided wires and the front one looked OK. The rear one didn’t. It looked like someone had put epoxy on some bare spots, and there were a couple more bare spots visible.

So we decided to change the wires. The local HD dealer didn’t have any spark plug wires, but they had plenty of t-shirts! I went to an independent dealer and all they had was a set of Accel braided wires. We installed them and it cranked and ran fine.

I trailered it back home and it cranked fine when I took it off the trailer.

Two days later, last Friday, I’m getting ready to go on a 3 day weekend trip with some friends. I started it up and it was running rough again, then almost immediately smoothed out, so quickly I thought I maybe just heard it running rough.

Rode to meet the others for the trip and we left after eating breakfast. Stopped for gas 125 miles later. Everything still OK. Stopped for gas again, OK. Then stopped at LongHorn for steaks. Went to start it up and it started misfiring again!

We checked in a motel and I found the HD dealer was a little over a mile away. They were about to close but the mechanic took a look at it. I cranked it up and it was running OK. I told the mechanic everything it was doing and he said it was probably the ignition module, as those could come and go before finally quitting altogether. He ruled out the coil going bad because it was doing it when started cold.

He said I could bring it back the next morning and he’d take a look at it. The next morning when I cranked it up it was misfiring again. When I got to the dealer they had another mechanic look at it. He said it could be the cam sensor going bad. They didn’t have any of the parts I might need in stock.

I left it with them for awhile to check out. I went back a couple of hours later and they said it was the plug wires. The didn’t have any new wires, so they put some stock used ones on. It ran fine.

All day it ran fine, although it seemed to have a soft popping sound now and then when coasting in gear.

This morning when I started it, it was running rough again. Not much choice but to ride it home. All day it ran good awhile then rough. One of my friends riding behind me said he could smell gas when it was running rough. It was still running rough when I got home.

Can anyone tell me what the problem is, or am I stuck with taking it to the dealer? The dealer probably won’t have the parts and have to order them.

But they’ve got plenty of t-shirts and stickers!!

Thanks in advance for anyone who can help ID my problem.

Replace the Ignition module with a SE 6800rpm module or a Daytona Twin Tech Ignition module. And I agree....get rid of the braded wires.
