Default Roadside Puncture Repairs

Ive been reading alot of threads on here about fixing a Tubed tyre at the side of the road.
Im just wondering why everyone seems to remove their wheel, are the tubeless tyres on Spoked wheels hard to remove without taking wheel off.
Many years ago when riding jap bikes with tubed tyres we didnt remove the wheel,we just kept wheel on,removed the tyre from one side and pulled the tube out, stuck a patch on the tube and that was it,plus we never really had any problems getting the tyre off one side off the wheel.
