Default Oil Approaches $142/bbl

This morning as I write this, oil is approaching $142/bbl.&nbsp\\; It seems that everybody wants to blame the oil companies for our problems.&nbsp\\; Ok, if that's the case why didn't oil companies raise prices back in 1998 when oil was trading around $10/bbl.&nbsp\\; Any rational thoughts on this?

Ten years ago, January 1998 Billy Clinton got his NAFTA passed. Oil was $10. Since then we have been sending our dollars and our jobs to huge 3rd world countries such as China and India causing them to compete for all natural resources.
&nbsp\\;
I still say that much of today's price is speculation, that the world economy can't thrive with these prices and that we'll see a crash in oil prices sometime in the next couple of years. It doesn't really matter, imho, how many people in how many countries want oil, if the price hammers the economy, the price will come down.
&nbsp\\;
$.02.

Dollars being tossed in investment wise feeling they have nowhere else to turn and poor leadership from goverment on key issues puts us right in the middle of this mess.Toss in the weak dollar on the world stage and you have the makings of a disaster,only the strength of the people will get us out of this mess.It felt great today when I got up and realized my 401 k had become just a 4 with the stock market taking a turd yesterday

I neglected to mention that while our population grows, we fail to build any new refineries or to drill for oil where we have gobs of it. We have more oil that's untapped than there is in all of the middle east. We don't need those bustards but we're fools.

&nbsp\\;
I floated the idea of building a nuclear reactor on the edge of Vail, Colorado to use as a heat source to extract shale oil from a strip mining operation on their ski slopes.&nbsp\\; The city council turned us down.

&nbsp\\;
&nbsp\\; Rational thoughts....hmmmm....sinking dollar values against other major world currencies &amp\\; speculation prolly account for a Big Chunk of the price increase over the past yr or so.
&nbsp\\; As for&nbsp\\;Oil Companies, back in 98 if they could have raised prices they surely would have. And I'd say they are certainly doin all they can to keep prices up! &nbsp\\;(and always have done so)
&nbsp\\; Capitalism feeds, thrives, and grows on greed. Oil Companies managers&nbsp\\;and stockhlders demand profit and are gettin it for sure! LOTSA folks are barely hangin on, while others are wearin Crocadile boots singin &amp\\; skippin&nbsp\\;all the way to the bank!&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\;

If you want something to get really expensive, turn it over to the federal bureaucrats. If you want a piece of the action, put some stock of the companies that do the drilling into your 401k.&nbsp\\;
