Just bought a '95 Sportster XLH883. Always wanted a Harley, finally got one. Used to ride a Yamaha V-twin way back in the late 80's, early 90's.

I have a fuel / petcock / diaphragm issue (I think) that any help on would be appreciated.
The bike starts great, every time, idles good, choke all the way out. I let it warm up, move the choke in, ride for about 4 - 5 minutes max, and the engine \\;stutters like it's getting no fuel at all. Backfires through the carb. Pull over, let it sit a minute. Sometimes have to turn it off &\\; start back up. Starts great, runs for 4 - 5 mins, same thing.

The guy who sold me the bike noticed that the vacuum hose was loose, reconnected it right behind the fuel line. This did not solve the problem.

Do I need a new petcock? Is the rubber diaphragm actually located in the petcock assembly?

Thanks for the welcome. You guys must remember how it felt, when you got your first Harley. I wanted the 2001 Fatboy, but couldn't swing the bucks, so I settled for the Sportster. I love the bike, just want to get it running good so I can save gas on my commute. I can twist wenches (I mean, wrenches) so I don't mind doing the work, just want to make sure I solve the problem and don't make it worse. Don't have a trailer yet, so I need to ride the bike to the shop if it comes to that.
