I bought a used 2007 XL 1200 Custom a couple weeks ago that has quite a few miles (21500, actually), but has been very well maintained (oil changes every 2500). \\; The check engine and battery lights came on yesterday on my way home from work. \\; I found a post about the Diagnostic Trouble Codes, and how to find out what the problem on your bike is. \\; I got the Battery Voltage Low code. \\; What risk am I running if I still ride it? \\; It starts and runs fine. \\; Can I charge the battery, or does replacing it sound like a necessity? \\; It's my first motorcycle, and I just want to be out on the road!!!!!

check all your connections like posted above, then charge your battery with a motorcycle battery charger/tender with float mode. Its 20 bucks at walmart. then see if it throws the code again. If it does, buy a new Battery.
Don't forget when you check the terminals to make sure they're all on tight, that you check out the terminals and look for corrosion. \\; If there is any, get one of those sponges that have the sandpaper all around them and scrub the terminals down shiny. \\; Good luck!
i had the same problem last month, it first affect the electric starter, you'll notice that it doesn't start right away. \\; then the ignition system will be affected too. \\; finally the engine won't start at all.
Unless you have proper equipment and understand about bike electrical system, better take it to workshop and let a mechanic take a look at the problem. \\;
Thanks for the input y'all. \\;Checked all the connections, everything's tight. \\; In fact, the ground negative connection was so tightly screwed to the ground point that the nut fuzed to the ground wire and I can't get it loose to take the battery out and charge it. \\; I wanted to take it out and attach the ring connectors to use conveniently when needed, but the ground wire just twists when I try to loosen the nut. \\; I can't get enough range of motion to break it loose. \\; Can I connect the charger clamps to the end of the ground wire (I wouldn't think so, but I'm no mechanic) and then to the positive terminal, or am I stuck taking it to a pro? \\;
Re-tighten the connections. \\;\\\\\\; If you have a volt meter, measure the battery voltage with the bike off (12.5 volts), then with the bike running(13.5 to 14). \\;\\\\\\; \\;\\\\\\;If you don't get a marked increase in voltage while running, you have a charging problem. You definitely DO NOT want to ride until you get this resolved or you WILL be stranded sooner or later.
