Default Back to 55? So much for 6th gear....

I was watching the news this morning and they said a study was on the way to see if we need to drop the speed limit back down to 55&nbsp\\;to save gasoline.&nbsp\\;Last time they did that was 1974.&nbsp\\;
&nbsp\\;
So much for 6th Gear....I don't even shift into it until almost 80 [:@]&nbsp\\;
&nbsp\\;
Just a note: If you look at some of the cars made in the late 70's you can actually find some with speedos that don't go over 80. They also regeared the cars to make 55 more comfortable.&nbsp\\;Unfortuanately, it also meant they didn't save gas in the same way....[&:]

The difference not considered these days is cars that have overdrive transmissions, are a hell of allot more efficient at greater speeds then compared to cars made in the 60s and 70s.&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\; Its a Red Herring.&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\; They need to stop avoiding the real issues, and look for ways to solve the real problem.
&nbsp\\;
Drill here, Drill now, and export none of it!&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\; Going back to 55MPH is something I personally would loathe!

Heard about the 55mph idea a couple months ago. Wouldn't be too bad here in Florida just means the snowbirds would on be doing 10 - 20 mph under the limit when you catch them instead of 20 -30 mph.

Only way to cure the gas prices it to control the speculation of oil commodities.

As I recall, the roads are safer at the higher speeds. It was found driving at lower speeds people paid less attention to their driving. If the 55 limit is proposed we must make a LOT of noise and stop it. As said in an earlier post most cars on the road aren't geared to be efficient at 55.

Cars get better gas mileage at 65-70 then they will at 55. The idea of 55 and people going slower may save lives to some exent in a crash&nbsp\\;but when have seen someone actually doing 55 in a 55 zone. If you do 55 around here where I live in Northern VA, near DC, you will get honked at and possibly create an accident because you are going to f**kn' slow!

Wouldn't that be funny.....Big Oil would have to spend some of the money they claim to spend on R&amp\\;D on R&amp\\;D.
Donny...how was the trip?

Oh man! The 55 mph days were a nightmare! I was in the Navy at the time. My ship was based in Alameda and I would ride my Kawasaki 1000 home to SoCal every weekend that I was in port. It's imposable to do 55 down the I-5 for 430 miles! I got so many tickets! We better not go back to that!&nbsp\\;

Speeds her have been stedily dropping.&nbsp\\; There was some news story about how people were saving gas and slowing down was one of the things.&nbsp\\;
&nbsp\\;
Nothing more annioying then everyone doing 5 mph or more under the speed limit. Even in the fast lane.&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\; I don' have a problem with flks slowing down but&nbsp\\;PLEASE do the speed limit or stay in the slow lane.
