Default Primary chain auto tightener

Started to hear a different sound coming from my chaincase. Since my bike is an 06 I assumed it would be the inner primary bearing that would be the cause of the noise. I let the service manager and a mechanic at the dealer listen to it. Both said it is diffiniently not the sound the bearing makes, it fact they said they didn't hear anything unusual at all. So my question is, does anyone know if the auto tensioner on the chain clicks a notch would that cause the primary to sound different then before?

My guess is that it would. I manually did a primary chain adjustment recently and noticed a different sound...and a lot better performance. I'm not much of a wrench, but it was probably the easiest adjustment to anything I've ever made on any bike I've ever owned!

Blaster,
I just noticed the same thing on my 06 street Bob, just had it in for the 5000 mile service and the mechanic told me the same thing about the tensioner going to the next notch. Thats not to say that it couldn't be something else but I just wanted to let you know I got the same info. I have riden a couple hundred miles since and had no problems other than a different sound. Oh yeah the mechanic did check the primary and said everything looked good. Time will tell.

I purchased an auto tensioner for my 05 and installed it a few months ago.... description states it is the same as what they put in 06 and up.. Thing is it does not go up a notch it provides tension via a spring that maintains correct tension when the chain becomes more slack over time....
Not to question your mechanics knowledge but if you have the same spring style tensioner that I have.... what notch did it move to???

edit: just re-read your question and I have no idea how this tensioner could possible move a "notch" however as the tensioner does tighten i can see how the chain will have a little more bend where it goesover the tensioner and could produce a different noise...
now maybe the are using the word "notch" as meaning it moved a little bit.

I suspect the sound change would be more silent, but maybe a slight whine when hot. There maybe something else making unusual noise in there if it happened all of a sudden. Not familiar with the stator on the 06 but lots of talk about them lately biting the dust. Might be worth a check.

Rounder
According to the repair manual the tensioner in my bike has a spring that presses against a wedge shaped slider that is trying to lift the tensioner. The slider and the plate it slides on have teeth that are angled so it can move forward but not back. My thinking is that it has moved forward to the next tooth.

I've read all the posts I could find regarding the stator self destructing. Everyone said they heard nothing so I don't think that is it. I have had the derby cover off and the oil looks and smells like new.
&nbsp\\;
I will keep riding and hope there is nothing wrong, as I think is the case.
