Default had to lock it up...

I am riding down a country road and see a puppy on the side of the road.&nbsp\\; He decides to meander in my path.&nbsp\\; I go light on the front and&nbsp\\;lock up the rear.&nbsp\\; My thought was keep the front end light in case I have to hit him.&nbsp\\; My back tire starts smoking and begins to slide around me.&nbsp\\; I lete off the brake, bring it straight and just miss the beagle.&nbsp\\; Thank God for the dirt bike experience.
&nbsp\\;
It reminded me of how unpredictable animals are (including those driving cages).

I had a 120 pound or so lab jump out in front of me back in 1990. I hit him with full locked up rear at about 60mph. Threw me into the left lane under the bike. broke the dogs back and he died later.
I suffered a broken and torn knee and some road rash. Sometimes it happens so fast it just can't be avoided. Since that day,&nbsp\\;I scan scan scan and then scan some more. Thank god that day their was a wide shoulder for on coming traffic to avoid me. Be careful out there.

Dave ya might want to get street ridein thoughts to the top of the list.&nbsp\\; Street and dirt differ some in their brakein.&nbsp\\; on the street max brakein is 70% front and 30% rear.&nbsp\\; you can hit the front brake to nearly lock up if ya got the bike straight and center up.&nbsp\\; The front brake will rip off speed faster than ANY thing else.
&nbsp\\; Be very VERY careful of lockin up the rear brake.&nbsp\\; When the rear brake is unlocked and it starts rollin again it will slap back out of the slide.&nbsp\\; on pavement this slap back is often hard enough to sling the rider off the bike.&nbsp\\; this is called a hi side and often ends up with the bike slidein over the rider, nasty wrecks...&nbsp\\;
&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\;ya might want to&nbsp\\;find some practice place and work on some emergency stops.&nbsp\\; Nest time ya see a lil whatever up ahead pull the clutch and rip the throttle good blip.&nbsp\\; seems to get their attention and backs them off.&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\; Glad you came out of it in good shape man .&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\; enjoy&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\;

yikes!! jba111 has it right, you got very lucky that you didn't get tossed over the bike.&nbsp\\; Never let off the back brake once it's locked.&nbsp\\; ride it out to a stop.&nbsp\\;
&nbsp\\;
I locked up my front and rear last year and it's a scary thing fishtailing all over the road.&nbsp\\; I released and re-applied the front whilst keeping that back break locked the whole time till I stopped.&nbsp\\; the back brakes seem to like to lock up pretty easily.&nbsp\\;
&nbsp\\;
glad you are ok!

full lock up is way less than maximum breaking.&nbsp\\;

Need to upgarde to ABS my man - still glad you are both OK.&nbsp\\; My old man taught me not to brake for anything that wouldn't do me or my vehicle damage.&nbsp\\; I ran a cat over a few weeks back - came from no where ran across the road stopped looked at me and ran back right under my wheels and then into the house opposite.
&nbsp\\;
Actually I felt really bad being an animal lover and having cats of my own - so I go home park the bike up and walk back and knock on&nbsp\\;the door.&nbsp\\; No one around - so a little while&nbsp\\;later I pop back and the lady of the house comes out and I start explain what happened and how I couldn't have done anything and how bad I felt.&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\;She gets really frantic and I get called a murderer&nbsp\\;and a few other choice names to boot.&nbsp\\; Now I know she's upset - and I had come back to explain and I told her I thought she was little out or order.&nbsp\\; Anyway her boy friend or husband comes out to calm her down and says thanks and tells me the cat came in went its bed and died.&nbsp\\; Life's bitch huh!
