I've got the opportunity to purchase a 1998 Heritage Springer Softail. It's the 95 Anniversary model, and it's #2 of 3000 produced. 20k miles. It appears to be in immaculate condition, but I don't know anything about collectable Harley's.
Can someone please give me an idea of what it should be worth, and do these bikes appreciate? Also, it there a way with the vin# to verify that this bike is indeed #2 of 3000 produced - rather than the place on the bike that says so?
Thanks very much,
Russ In Vegas

Russ, you can probably find what you are looking for on Google, Prior to 2000 that was a different bike, frame differences and brakes, etc. Maybe someone here knows that stuff off the top of their head, but I would try Google. Good luck!

As far as I'm concerned, these "collectible" bikes are only worth a bit more than the standard bike. \\; I remember looking at the 35th anniversary Dyna Glides and at that time the dealership was asking top dollar and saying they're collectible. \\; I laughed. \\; My Heritage is only worth the cost of the paint job over a regular Heritage as far as I'm concerned. \\; Maybe in 50 years it will have a little more value but I doubt it. \\;

I \\; have never seen H~D collectible bikes bring any money. The anniversary models were so limited they were to bring great money but in 2003 for the 100th ann. they were made for 18 months and I think everyone and his brother \\; got at least 1, so their value was lost upon title to a buyer. I would say that # 2 and # 3000 aren't worth anything different from other bikes of that year.
Beware****Collectable****Rare****And so on. Remember that any collectable item is only worth something if you have a buyer to buy it. \\; It can be 1 of 3000 but if you can't find a buyer to pay what you want its just another bike. That is the cruel reality of collecting that people don't tell you about. Doesn't matter if its coins, cameras, steiff teddie bears or RARE Harley Davidsons. But if you get great intrisic satisfaction owning a serialized bike enjoy. JMHO

RE: Help with Appraisal Please - #2 0f 3000 made
To be honest, it's not worth anymore than the standard model.
The "collectable anniversary models" never really caught on because other than "custom paint" and a little "anniversary" trim, they're no different than the standard model.

Think that if you own it long enough (think 35 years) and keep it stock the value might be there. I own a 76 FLH Liberty Edition. Only thing that makes it different from another 76 is paint, decals and emblems. Has just over 5K on the motor. Have non-stock tires on her but I have the original ones. Waiting to show her at the AMCA meets in 3 years when she is eligible. To someone else she is nothing more than a 76 FLH and valued accordingly. But try finding one (if you of the mind to) in stock condition and there are not that many out there. Have not as of yet been able to determine just how many were made. Know production totals but that is all. So, what is it worth? To me everything, to others nothing.
The bike you are looking at is no longer produced. MoCo tried it again in somewhat similar fashion in 05-07 with another springer but that too did not last. If you like it and it is worth what you are willling to spend, then buy it. Not sure I would get it for "investment" purposes tho. I would conatct MoCo regarding verification of it being #2 of 3K. I believe they keep that information. A buddy of mine has a first year Fat Boy. When he had to have the tanks fixed because of paint problems, they insisted on having his vin number before they would issue him new ones.
Thanks, Sheep... It's my dream bike. \\; Would have bought one in 03 but HD quit making them, so bought an 04 Heritage. \\; Still dreamed of owning a Springer one day. \\; Heard this one was for sale from another forum, and it was located just 45 miles away! It only had 16,000 miles and was totally like new off the dealer floor (except with Stage II and a couple of other accessories!). \\; I was very fortunate. \\; Anyway, don't wanta hijack the thread!
