Default looking for route suggestions

My 11 year old son and I will be passing through Arizona on our way to San Diego and I am interested in getting a locals perspective or routes to take. As things currently stand we arrive at the Grand Canyon on the 1st of August and need to be in San Diego by the evening of the 3rd. I have some concerns with how hot it will be and we are kicking around the idea of traveling early, finding a place to sit out the heat and then finishing late.
&nbsp\\;
My boy has done extensive time on the&nbsp\\;back here in the mountains of Colorado. &nbsp\\;This will be his first trip across the desert. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
