Default How often to clean K&N air filter?

Just got a K&amp\\;N HD-800 Air Filter and I'm wondering how often to clean it under normal town, street, highway conditions. Any suggestions?

Depends upon riding conditions......up to 10,000 miles or if it looks really dirty. If you want, you could clean it evry time you wash the bike.
Geez, that other avatar looks familiar...............

Not being a smartass, but clean it when it gets dirty. Depends on the riding conditions (dusty dirt roads, crisp clean mountain air, etc.) I use K&amp\\;N in all my cages, and they get cleaned whenever I change the oil, usually 5000 km (3100 mi.)

If the filter is under the football cover then you could probably get away with cleaning once or twice a year. I also like to clean mine a few days before I go on a big mileage tour(3000+ miles).
&nbsp\\;
The filter is going to be an open filter then you might want to clean it a 2-3 time during the riding season. The exposed filters collect more crap in them.
&nbsp\\;
If you haven't aleady done so, buy the K&amp\\;N cleaning kit.

Pop Pop Clean me&nbsp\\; LOVE IT!!!
Appreciate the info....Ya I SHOULD have read the box but I have&nbsp\\;a serious anti-clutter program. I've currently got so much clutter in my garage that I REFUSE to allow any more to collect, so the box hit the trash and was in the dump before I thought to read it DOH! I'm a pretty easy rider, so I think i'll stick to Mid-Season and End-Season. That should hook me up. Thanks much!!!

Ditto, not saying this to be a smartass, but clean it when it gets dirty.&nbsp\\; The instructions on the box are a guideline but they have no way of predicting your riding conditions.&nbsp\\; When it looks like the oil is going away (the pinkish red will get duller and duller), it needs to be re-oiled and you might as well clean it at that point if not before.&nbsp\\; And, if it is dirty and needs cleaning, you will have to re-oil it when you clean it.&nbsp\\; I bought a K&amp\\;N cleaning kit for 14 bucks&nbsp\\;and it will clean and oil your filter several times, so it won't cost much to do it each time.&nbsp\\; Be careful not to over-oil it.&nbsp\\; It doesn't take as much as you will think.&nbsp\\; If you do, let it sit and let the extra oil run out.&nbsp\\; Even after doing that, I still had oil dripping down on my motor after the first few rides after reinstalling it.&nbsp\\; Doesn't hurt anything but a good wash job though.

I clean ours every oil change which is usually around 3,000 miles.&nbsp\\; But, I live in West Texas where we have a lot of blowing dirt and sand and the filters are open below the football cover.

Got this straight from the K&amp\\;N site:
&nbsp\\;
All K&amp\\;N Air Filters are washable and reusable. Your normal driving environment will determine when you should clean your air filter. If you drive in a non-dusty wet environment with lots of trees and vegetation, we recommend you inspect your filter every 50,000 miles. If you live in dry or desert conditions, we recommend you inspect your filter every 30,000 miles. Extremely dusty conditions such as driving regularly on dirt roads would require even more frequent inspection. A filter inspection does not necessarily mean it needs to be cleaned. An inspection should be visual to identify the amount of dirt build up on the filter. There will always be dirt and this can even help filtration. Only when the dirt build up becomes excessive should you make the decision to clean the filter. A K&amp\\;N filter can accumulate dust up to 1/8th of an inch before cleaning is required. The easy way to make this determination is to see if you can visually identify all of the visible aluminum wire mesh on the top of the pleats. If it is still visible, the filter does not yet require cleaning and can be replaced in the vehicle. The next subsequent inspection should occur in 5,000 to 10,000 miles, once again, depending on driving conditions. Once the aluminum wire is covered with dirt and no longer visible in some places on the exterior of the filter, it’s time for cleaning.
