How does one know when the clutch is adjusted properly? My clutch lever has no slack when out all the way. Another way to put is is when the clutch is fully engaged (I hope), the lever is ALL the way out with no slack.
The question is: shouldn't there be a little slack in the lever when it is all the way out??
Thanks,
Wolf

I beleive the rule of thumb is 1/8 inch of play in the clutch lever before it starts to engage. This is easy to do but if you don't have any experience in adjusting cables of this type: get instruction first.

No, it doesn't slip but seems too close for comfort. I am taking it to the dealer tomorrow. I'm not a Harley wrench but common sense tells me there should be some play in the lever.
Thanks for the input!

does it slip? if not then you have some room for adjustment, id suggest letting a professional do it or maybe letting him show you.
good luck!!

There should be a little play, about 1/8 inch, as Tripper said. It's an easy fix at the adjuster in the middle of the clutch cable. You might slide the rubber cover back (if it has a cover) and give it an eyeball before heading out to the dealer. There's a nut and a couple flats for a wrench on the metal sleeve. Put a wrench (7/16, IIRC) on the flats to hold it, put another wrench on the nut and loosen it. Turn the metal sleeve one way or the other to loosen the cable at the lever. When you get the freeplay you want, tighten the nut , slide the rubber cover back over the adjuster, and go ridin'.

The slack should be measured by pulling the outer cable away from the lever perch. There should be a 1/8" gap between the ferrule and the perch. Before doing this you should check the adjustment of the push rod at the transmission end. Follow the manual instructions..it's very easy to do.
Well, I got 'er done. Lost internet reception before being able to read those good replies. Obviously back on line now.
But, the new dealer I'm trying out hit a bullseye the first shot. The clutch is now adjusted with the slack you guys recommended and it's lubed and doesn't try to break my hand anymore....all for next to no money. This dealer did a good job (did I really say that??).
It's like riding a different bike it shifts so much better now! HOWWEEELLLLLLLLLLLL !!!!!!!!
Thanks for the help guys. Next time I'll know.....

Take off the clutch inspection cover. Remove the rubber cover on the cable, Loosen cable completly. Lossen clutch adjustment bolt and then tighten nut back to hand tight, and then turn nut back 1/2 turn. Depress handle three times and then tighten clutch adjustment bolt using allen key and wrench. Tighten cable till no slack and replace rubber cover.
