Old School now meets New School. I just purchased my first NEW Harley a 2006 VRSCA. So you all will be seeing me hanging around this room as well as the Ironhead forum.

Glad to hear it. I am sure that you will not be disappointed. It certainly will be different than your other bikes have been.

Not may people here regularly, but I am. I also own an '06, so maybe in time we can trade tips/stories.

[sm=gears.gif]Watch that rear tire. The Rod will spin 'em easier than most Harleys.

What is the best way to break in the engine to get the most HP out of it? I am up to 21 miles right now. I am running it for a few miles at a time running through the grears, varying the RPM. I am also keeping in under 50MPH and under 4000RPM so far.

The indications of uj034's article may be accurate, but your new bike arrived with miles already on it. This article seems to refer to the bike in question as a "race bike", and this may not be the best idea for a bike that is going to be operated on the street at various RPMs.

Why not follow these ideas for my street machine? This is because the bike is test run for the first miles at the factory, I've watched it done. If the bike needed to have the crap run out of it anymore than it already has, it would have already been done. The article said that the crucial time is in the first 20 miles. My bike arrived with 8. You are over 20 now. You would be outside this "critical time" period already. These ideas more than likely were developed from protocol of new engine builds with 0 miles.

Read page 86 of you owner's manual. I followed that schedule to a tee, minus one time it was to 5800 for about 20 seconds on an on-ramp. About the biggest thing that I did that the manual does not specify is that I did not allow the bike to maintain any RPM for any length of time over about 1 minute during the first 50 files. Stay in a gear that will allow you to operate the motorcycle at normal speeds, while refraining from exceeding the stated limit, 4000 RPM for the first 50. (Third, if I remember correctly) Ride the bike at 30MPH for a minute, then ride at 40 for a minute, then at 25 for a minute(in town riding. Be in fourth or fifth on the highway and 40 to 60 MPH)

I don't believe that specific MPH matter, as long as you maintain the RPM limits (but I did not exceed 55 MPH either). I did not, and would not, lug the engine in higher gears for the first 500, not the first 50 as it seems to be indicating.

I have encountered absolutely no problems with my bike in the roughly 6k miles it has on it now. (Besides the low rear tread, refer to my first post in this section) Harley spent many-a-year developing this bike, and the engine in it. Don't think that they didn't put considerable time into the development of proper break-in specs. I understand that Harley's break-in is the most conservative of the major manufactures of motorcycles, but so what, I wanted my bike to last.

5800 with the bike having about 425 miles on it, where the manual says not to exceed 5500 RPM, not in the first 50 where it is 4000 RPM.

I am at 23 miles now. I have yet to break 4000RPM. I was worried at first when I read that article since I am now past 20 miles. I have not stayed at a set RPM or speed for more then 1-2 seconds. I have just been running it up to 3-4000 RPM and then back down over and over in back streets in various gears.
