Default NEED INSIGHT ON '54 PAN

1ST TIME HERE, GREAT SITE, I NEED SOME INSIGHT FROM THE PANHEAD GREATS

MY PAN WAR RUNNING & QUIT LIKE I HAD CUT THE SWITCH OFF

NO FIRE TO THE PLUGS
HOT BATT., POWER TO THE COIL, POINTS SEEM TO BE SET CORRECTLY,
I PULLED THE PLUG, WHILE STILL IN THE WIRE I BROKE THE POINTS
WITH A SCREWDRIVER WHILE HOLDING THE SPARKPLUG IN MY HAND WOW, LOTS OF FIRE!
I CAN'T FIND A LOOSE WIRE, GROUND LOOKS OK. NOW WHAT???

ALSO I JUST INSTALLED A PRIMARY BELT DRIVE. BUT I CAN'T QUITE PLUG THE CHAIN OILER
WHAT IS THE CORRECT WAY TO STOP THE OIL

ANY INFO WOULD BE GREAT

If you got spark now the bike should start if timing is correct and fuel is available.Points are cheap and should be replaced yearly along with condenser.Higher speeds will wear point block even faster.Still a 6volt? Ignition switches fail like you mentioned even though they feel good.Aftermarket ones arent much better.Your oil can be shut off at pump by closing set screw.Dont crank it down hard. The best solution is to have machinist make a plug at tin area where chain oiler exists.

WECO...change your condenser before you do anything else. Seems that a lot of aftermarket ones are made in Mexico and are as worthelss as tits on a boar.

If the plugs don't fire when the engine is turned over, but you do get spark when manually opening the points with a screwdriver, there are 2 possible problems. Either the timer cam is not opening the points or the points are not making contact and you bridged across them with our screwdriver just before opening them. Disconnect the points wire at the coil and turn the engine over 'til the points are closed. 'Flash' the points wire on the coil terminal with the switch on to make sure the points are grounding the wire. Next, turn the engine to get a cam lobe under the points rubbing block and repeat the test to make sure the wire is no longer grounded.

One more thing to check if the wire stays grounded is the condition of the rubbing block. If the moving contact is touching the cam because the rubbing block is worn, it will behave just as you described.
