Default Tools for Changing Oil, Primary, and Tranny Fluids?

Hi guys, planning to do my own servicing for above fluids. Purchased the oil filter fitting at dealership last night, but was wondering what type of sockets etc are needed to appropriately remove & tighten (to correct in/lbs or ft/lbs). I have a few tools, but think am going to have to buy some more. Any recommendations on tools that will be needed would be great.

Additionally, would you guys help me verify where all 3 drain holes are. Believe have located the primary drain, but definately confused where the location of tranny drain is along with oil (even after looking at my $58 service manual).. Again, much thanks for helping a new guy. mb

Not sure what model Harley you have, the oil filter removal is done with a slotted finger cap type wrench, available at your harley dealer, you reinstall by hand. The drain plug for the primary is torx head, and I use liquid teflon to help seal it, it's a pipe type thread. The engine oil and trans plugs are allen headed in the center of the nut head bolts they are straight across from each other if you have a tour model, I usually replace the o-rings if they look torn at all, and I use liquid teflon on these as well.

MB,

I know for the primary derby cover you most likely will need some torx wrenches I believe these have similar heads to allen but slighty different. I know on my sportster the drain line is a rubber hose near the kickstand that you remove the plug from to drain. It confused me when I went to do it the first time b/c I was so used to cars with a drain on the oilpan. Not sure what model you have but on my sportster the practice is to drain the oil tank from the hose and then take the filter off the front to drain the excess. I would just tighten the oil filter by hand and not try to torque it down as you could do some damage if you really have to struggle to take it off. Perhaps someone with your model bike could give you the exact locations of the primary/tranny drains. Are you riding a deluxe. I saw from your previous posts that you are asking questions regarding one. If so, what year? I know a few knowledgable folks such as TCSTD have a deluxe and should be able to help you.

Good luck

-Ryan

If you have a Softail...

The transmission drain is up between the shocks. I'd suggest using a socket to do the initial half a turn or so, then use an allen wrench. The factory cinches up the plugs pretty tight and there is a risk of stripping the allen head in the plug. The plug is either 5/8" or 3/4" hex head, can't remember which. The transmission fill plug is 3/8" allen.

The drain plug for the crankcase is on the high side of the bike in the frame just by the shocks. Same plug as the transmission.

The primary is an allen bolt on the bottom of the outer primary case.

I'd suggest you get an service manual from the Harley shop. It is the best $50 you can spend there.

Without knowing what bike you have, it's hard to give you reliable information. Here's the best I can do.

If you have an 80 inch EVO, the drain plugs are 3/4 inch, and the primary will be torx.

If you have an 88 inch, the oil and trans. plugs will be 5/8 inch with an allen center. As Geezer said, use the socket to loosen the plug, then use the allen to remove it.

If you have a softail, the oil plug is in the frame just under the oil tank on the right side. The trans plug is between the rear shocks.

If you have a touring model or Dyna, the oil drain and the trans drain are both in a pan under the transmission. The plug that faces down is the transmission, and the plug that comes out the front horizionally is the oil.

The derby cover is torx, and the primary drain is either a torx or allen. I think I found on my dresser that the drain plug was an allen. I've only changed it once so I'm not sure. Seems I remember thinking it strange that the drain was allen and the derby was torx.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Bill
