Default Looking at a 73 ironhead stock

I have been riding vintage honda's for 5 years because i could never aford a harley. I have just located a 73 ironhead for $5000 Canadian and am thinking about trading in my Honda's to purchase. Its stock and runs well. is this a good deal? Numbers match and it was supposedly sitting in a barn for 15 years. it has on the original tires and the speedo reads 13000. Any advice would be apprediated. Awesome forum, I have already learned allot.

1973=AMF yes? Not sure what the current exchange rate is but that seems a tad bit high to me. Buddy of mine bought a simular "project" that was a 1977 for $1000 US.

zmicrofilm,

Sportsters from the 1970's (including early XLCH's) that are running and in good condition are generally selling between $2,000.00 and $2,700.00 USD. A lot will depend on what part of the country they're in, the actual condition (as opposed to advertised condition), desperation of the seller, and time of year. Contrary to popular opinion, AMF Sportsters have proven to be desirable bikes, but parts are getting more and more difficult to find. At the exchange rate for CDN funds, I think $5,000.00 CDN is too high by a wide margin. You'd do better buying one in the U.S. and having it shipped up, but of course the ability to check it out first would be severely hampered...

Thanks for the info...It hard to put a price on it. I've seen some nice bikes on the net for around the same price. Im hopeing to still get this one though. Ill post some pic if I get it.

Figure in the medical bills if it has a kick start. Figure at least one broken leg or ankle

Fortunately we have free healthcare in Canada. Also fortunately, it has an electric starter.
