Cool, now us Custom lovers have our own private "pig pen".

When I first saw it in the dealer, and fell instantly in lust. Got the wife a little jealous, but she did let me have the money for it.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m103/Citoriplus/IMG_3037.jpg

When It got to my house, the wife is now a Harley widdow. Unless she instists on riding with me, but that's OK I like her too.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m103/Citoriplus/IMG_3090.jpg

Now is that a sweet "butt" or what?

Just added the V&H Big Radius and Ness Big Sucker to go along with all the other "trinkets". Got some 501's, chrome controls, ISO grips, chrome switch housings, braided cables, solo seat, lowering kit, etc, planned for this winter.....Bike rides very nice, and no issues at all w/ 1,200 miles and ticking!

Skips69,
Love the pipes, but how did you get the ugly amber reflectors off the front fork tubes?

skips69
10-13-2006, 08:38 AM
These are the chrome lowers, and didn't come with the reflectors already installed originally, and I just never put them on myself, afterwards. But, to get the reflectors off is pretty straight forward. Just pull them off, and clean up remaining residue w/ mineral spirits, WD-40, Goo-Gone, etc. Some guys like to heat them up first w/ a hair gun, then work them off by sawing with small test fishing line.

Well that explains it. They "look" like the regular sliders in the picture, just a bad angle I suppose.
I'll just have to do the heat, saw and "de-gooing" trick. I put a Kuryakyn fork brace on already so chrome covers are out, and if I have to choose between the two, I would rather keep the brace.
Thanks

Really nice bike, but your right the turn signals are a little big considering the rest of the bike's look.

Kuyakyn makes some nice small ones that might suit your taste.

Love the color. All I ever see are the solid black ones - like mine. Kind of wish I had held out for 2-tone, but mine was on the floor at MSRP, and every other Harley I've ever had was black, so bought another one. Chrome goes good with them all though. Nice mods so far.

It really doesn't cost much to send yout tins back to Harley Spectrum paint, and have ANY color or tank decal applied by HD.
It's a perfect winter project, and it seperates your bike form every other "look-a-like".

Nice color, and welcome to the "Custom" club. I have had mine for almost two months now and love the hell out of it, I'm sure you will too.
I think that HD may want to think about upping the production numbers for it as it seems to be a VERY popular choice for 07.

I fell in love with the picture of the two tone (red/black) one in the catalog. But when I saw the black one on the dealers floor I HAD TO HAVE IT, NOW!!!!
The up side is that I want to do some custom paint and the factory black is a better fit for that than any of the two tones. Besides if you plan on repainting something, why spend extra for two tone paint that's going to get sanded or media blasted off later.
I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine, its a really nice bike.

I like the those centerline foot controls. Although I got the stealth grips, I don't much like the stealth pegs/foot controls. Thinking of going with the ironside, centerline, or slotted chrome and rubber.

best Harley i`ve ever owned (my 4.), runs just great. There are little differences on our european versions (active intake and exhaust system, cause of the resticting emmision laws), but the rest, the same great stuff like your US versions:-))))

Nice looking pistol, I like the blue better than I tought I would when I first saw the paint chips in the catalog.
They need to do something about that, how the hell do they expect you to pick a color from that is a mystery to me.
Good thing I like black better. Not hard to picture that in your head.

My bike's twin brother.

Where was that first picture taken, looks like a really nice winding road riding area.
It looks a lot like some of the more rural areas of New York and Pennsylvania.
Just have to watch out for the slow farm tractors, cows, and the ever hazardous deer.

Hi Citoriplus,

yes, twin brother:-)softtail custom black/chrome, the very best of all (colour)combinations.....
the picture is taken in a area between Frankfurt/M. (ex US-Airbase) and Heidelberg, the so-called "Odenwald", its my favored "playground" at the weekend and yes, it looks like your Pennsylvania back roads and there are also tractors, deer and many cows, not really the same (its a little bit small in comparison with US) but nevertheless a lot of fun to drive.

have a good time

Skips69 thanks for posting your pics with those big radius pipes! I fell in love with them when I first saw them, but have been looking for a picture of them on a new FXSTC. She looks good, as do all the rest. Mine goes in to the doctor for her 1,000 mile checkup, boy it went fast! I'm interested to see if any of you guys have any pictures with solo seats. I've been kicking around a LePera Bare Bones with the "Biker Gel", has anyone used any seats with that in them before? I've only knocked off the reflectors, added grips & pegs, and front & rear axle covers, but I will post some pictures shortly. Keep those pictures coming!

Thanks, and they sound great! Getting a little louder now I think actually. They do so much for the bike, and not just in the looks dept. - love to hear that throaty exhaust, and none of the other annoying little noises that I heard before. That and the rest of the Stage 1 and dyno has it running cooler and gave it some more oomph.

Solo seats are still slow to emerge. HD has the Brawler I guess, and I think Corbin has one or two out for the 06' and 07's. I recently spoke to a LePera rep - saying December for the new Bare Bones. Mammoth Choppers is right about the same time frame. Mustang does have the wider rear fender bibs available now for the 06' - 07' models. Check out their website if interested (still $30).

Your retro seat looks a good inch or more lower than the standard king/queen which is good for me as my legs (as well as the rest of me!) are short - is this your experience? Are you further back / away from the foot controls, does the seat increase the reach of the leg (bad for me) or is it about the same as it was standard?

Yes! i don`t measure it, but you sit very m u c h lower, as with the original seat!
It`s great, so i am a short person too (about 170cm).
The bad news: you are more away from the footpegs, but for my bodyheight its ok, shorter then 170cm and you need other footcontrols, thicker footpegs ore similiar changes.......

Hi Jo,

Many thanks for your quick reply. I think I'll order the seat, it does look very clean yet still comfortable. If my legs feel too stretched I guess I can always try heel rests or something.

Hi Skips69,

a question to you:
when you disconnect/connect the battery, is there anything i have to pay attention to it, cause of the new security-system?
I also want to do some changes over the winter and so the battery-groundcable must be disconnected, but wanna no neighbours at the windows, cause the alarm goes on:-)...

Rgds, Jo

skips69
12-02-2006, 03:29 PM
I don't have an audible alarm, just the new "key fob disabling system". But, nothing special mentioned in the shop manual about disconnecting the battery from what I remember. I've had the battery disconnected a few times already on this bike, haven't had any problems afterwards with re-starting or anything out of the norm. Might want to look in your owner's manual though if you have the audible alarm feature - could be different?

I did just find out the switch housings are new for the 07's. Had to take the ones back that I purchased from the local dealership this morning. I guess now you're not able to start the bike while in gear unless the clutch lever is pulled in is the new feature - LH lower housing has a hole in it for a plunger to stick through (similiar to the RH side for the front brake). Neutral safety switch? They were unaware of it and had to order the updated housing for me. None on the shelf at all. Did some more checking while down there, and found out the chrome master cylinder kit I "should" have ends in 06A, and they sold me an 06 (without the "A"). I compared the old to the new but don't see any difference, so I'm going to try and use the one I bought and see what happens. They didn't know why the catalog lists 06A now, since they were already new for the 06' models last year? I already went through all of this for the lower belt guard, front axle spacers, chrome axle covers, chrome fork slider's, etc, etc. A helluva lot of changes for one year, and still finding more every week.......

Dear Custom Owners
My question is about the stock Softail Custom handlebars....
After my RK03 I'm thinkking about a 2007 Night Train but I do not like its bars at all. I like Custom's bar a lot. I think it will fit well in the NT.
My question: is it a confortable position to ride with it ? I think yes, but I prefer to ask directly to the experts...
Thanks in advance
Halford

Citoriplus
12-05-2006, 12:00 PM
Not sure if anyone can realistically answer that. What's comfortable for one guy isn't necessarily good for another. I think you should take trip to the dealers and try sitting on a Custom to see if the bars feel comfortable TO YOU.
But for the different seat styles everything but the bars is basically the same between the NT and Custom so you should be able to judge for yourself if the bars feel right for you.

I’m only about 5’ 7” and they are just a tad too high and far forward for me, but I’m not typical in that I also have a physical “problem” caused by an accident that damaged my right elbow.

I remember reading someplace that the grips should not place your hands above your shoulder level, so taller guys, and gals over about 5’ 9” will probably find that they fit very nicely. Shorter than about that, like me and you may find that they are borderline and may or may not be as nice for riding long distances.

I was forced to tip the bars back three or so inches to make it easier for me. But my right hand and forearm still go numb after twenty or so miles if I don’t use the throttle lock a lot. So if I can find a cheap set of risers and bars from a Standard I may try replacing the mini apes as the Standards bar places the grips lower and farther back.

They should also help when I have to move the bike around in the garage. It’s the one thing I can do much better with my old 700cc Yamaha. Being more than a foot shorter in length and some 250lbs lighter it’s a hell of a lot easier to push around by myself.

Have Fun and Good Luck Looking.

Sitting on a bike in a showroom won't tell you squat.
You need to ride in 60 MPH wind for an hour to really understand what is comfortable, and what isn't. What helps out your back, and what doesn't.

Personally, I've removed apes from two prior motorcycles. I don't like the leverage they offer while riding. Arms are higher in the wind, wrists and below the hands, and to me, all of the pressure translates to your back holding your posture into the wind.
I think the Deuce bars offer the best riding comfort, and the best leverage so your lower back won't ache after a few hours on the road.
Arms are out straighter, with a little reach to help out the back, wrists are aligned with hands and arms, and your lower back has very little pressure to keep your body upright.

Craftsman - Probably like $60 right now with all of the sales for the holidays if you look around and follow the weekly ads. I think I got it on sale for $100 about 4 years ago. They've steadily came down since then. Get's used alot more than just on bikes too, at my place. Very handy to have around the garage.

Was supposed to take delivery of my FXSTC on Friday but she's still undergoing "beauty treatment" so I thought I'd post some work in progress piccies. Actually all that's missing from phase 1 is a bit of cabling a new 6 spoke front wheel - which hasn't arrived yet. Still not sure about the seat, might go for the retro or a sidekick. Exhaust system & seat in the new year, tho my dealer said it might be early spring before there's a good choice of pipes for European 07 models. I'll take proper pictures and post them later.

paulca,
Nice looking bike, but I have a couple of questions about those handle bars if you don't mind.
Where did you get them, and how do they fit compared to the originals?
I'm looking to replace mine with some that put the grips lower and farther back.
From the pics it looks like thy might be just what I'm looking for.

Thanks

Thanks Citoriplus, I like your bike too!

Fire away with questions, I don't mind at all.

The bars are Harley Swingback handlebars (p/n 56039-03A). For me these are much more comfortable and I like the styling. As I'm only 5' 6", reaching up on the apes (& they're only mini apes) was not comfortable as my legs seemed to be pulled back from the pegs. With a rise of 5.5" against 10.5" on the standards I'm not stretching up pulling my feet away from the pegs. The pullback is 8.0" vs 7.25", not much different but because I'm not reaching up, they feel closer (elbows more relaxed) and I sit lower and more relaxed in the saddle. Also the rear end was dropped an inch, so both feet are firmly planted when needed.

A technician at the dealer gave me a tip for short reach folk like me is to put an FL brake pedal pad on so the right foot doesn't have to turn inwards to reach the brake pedal. So I have a rather large FL brake pedal pad on which doesn't look perfect but is very comfortable too. I'm at the age where comfort takes precedence over styling - though styling is still important :D.

Guys I am about a day away from picking up one of these customs. Got to have one, been in love with it since I saw one on the show room back in the summer. But, cant make up my mind if I want to go with black which is what I originally thought I wanted till I walked into my stealer the other day and saw one of those sude blue and black two tones sit'n there. Thats a great looking color but I dont know if long term I can go with a soft color like that. What do yall think of it?

Also, I have to have a windshield, do any of yall have any pics of your new customs that have a windshield? I'm thinking a HD quick standard size would look good on her?

Looking for input!

DG,

My preference was & is black, doesn't mean other colours are not as good or even better - it's just a personal choice. Also black sets off chrome goodies very nicely. On the other hand there'll be a lot of black ones around. Red is very nice too.

I don't have a shield but I saw a black FXSTC the other day with an HD screen, it seemed big for the bike though. The bike looked OK but something smaller with clean lines might have suited it better like: http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/gma_product.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=84552444184390 3&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374309145439&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374309145439&bmUID=1165771265648&bmLocale=en_US

The Wind Vest http://www.windvest.com/products/products.html looks good too and reports on it's effectiveness without undue buffering are good. Again it's all personal choice.

Finished up the bars, controls, new head light, moving the front turn signals, adding braided lines, etc. Finally found a solo seat as well! Took some quick pics, but have for the time left the sissy bar on. Not the look I am after, but was in a hurry to take some short rides.

I was waiting on LePera or mammoth Choppers to come out with a solo, but production kept getting put back for the new bike's. I started hearing about C&C's here on this board and ultimately went with them. The seat arrived quickly, and the price was comparable to what I was going to pay anyway. The seat is well made, fits the bike good and is more comfortable than the Bare Bones I ran on a previous bike (more padding). I wish it sit me back a little farther and down a little lower (as the Bare Bones does), but the extra padding that this on has is a nice trade off (plus is not even broke in yet). Some closer shots if anyone is still looking or interested in solo's for the 06-07's.....

I agree this sissy bar is not too bad of a look. If it was a regular HD detacheable or HD rigid style that stood straight up, would probably look goofy. As it is the stock FXSTC sissy bar, and is more rounded and curved back, it's not too bad looking without the pad (or in this case the seat itself bolted to it). I'm planning on taking it off whenever the solo is on the bike (90% of the time) next spring and summer. But for now, grabbing some riding here and there through the winter time, I need my bags on the bike and so they're back on right now and the bolts and spacers I made are for use with the sissy bar.......Still would like to find some time this winter and make my bags detacheable and possibly look into making a detacheable sissy bar set-up that will work for the stock seat. The stock seat is great for 2-up riding, so planning on keeping it.

Skips69,
Love that look with the pipes and all, but was wondering if your going to leave the sissy bar "as is"?
Reason I ask is that everytime I seethosetwo holes for the seat with nothing in themit makes me think that something is missing.
I know its not my bike and your entitled to do what you want with it, but might I suggest you stop off at the local bicycle shop and see about getting a pair of those little 1" red reflectors for a kids bike. You can get a pair of stainless steel or chromed acorn nuts from a hardware store to fit them and use them to fill up the holes.
The whole thing will probably cost less than the gas it takes to go get them. But it will fill up the holes with something that's at leastmarginally useful.

Well, not riding too much right now. Been some decent weather, but missing most of the 50 degree days (work), and hitting all of the rainy days (off). So, not really on the forefront of my mind right now. I don't think it's too bad of a look, but once the weather warms up (for real), I'd probably take it off when I have the solo on the bike. The red reflectors definately won't be happening though, ha, ha. I already left them off of the front fork sliders, eventually will get the ones off of the rear fender too - don't want to add any more. Maybe some small sissy bar/backrest emblems to screw into the holes, or something else? But, probably just take the bar off altogether when the solo goes on.
I still plan to look into making a detacheable sissy bar for the stock seat. Maybe I'll get back onto that in a couple weeks and get the bags back to detacheable as well.

Went with the black FXSTC as well......traded in an '04 Nighttrain. Drag bars were very uncomfortable on longer rides.......much more vibration compared to the mini apes. Having that 6th gear also helps with keeping the ride smoother at higher speeds. The stock seat didn't make it out of the dealership......they actually threw in the retro seat as it was on the bike at the time.......so if anyone wants/needs a stock seat I'll hook you up. Bars are next to go......replacing with the fat mini apes and mirrors with internal signals to ditch the front turn signals......I'll post pics when this has been done....should clean up the front end quite a bit......no coin for the chrome controls though.......anyone have any insight on V& H Fuel Pak versus PC III....I went V&H with the Big Shots staggered and the Ness Big Sucker.......definite difference but wondering if PCIII would have made more sense????

Those "ugly, fat stock seats" thatalot of folks seem todislike so muchfor the Custom are going for some pretty good money on ebay. They're selling for more than it costs for HD's chrome switch housings (hint, hint). And, they're selling for about the same price as a complete aftermarket kit - chrome switch housings, master cylinder, levers, etc. Might sell that seat and getthe chrome you're needing.........Good luck either way, you're on the way with the new bars already.

Hi, people!

This is my newest bike, just got her on October 14. Still kinda stock, need intake, pipes, bigger bags (those are my old ones from the Superglide), and a console speedo/tach. WHY Harley does not put a combo speedo/tach on their factory bikes puzzles me...

Mo' money, maybe? Hmmmm.

Anyway, as soon as I saw this color in the showroom, I fell in love! hehe! Knew I'd never need ta alter or add to THAT! (IMHO)

As far as the seat goes, I DIG IT! The BEST factory seat I've ever had! (My babe likes it, too! A major plus!)

OK, I need some input from you people. (Please?) :D

First, which pic ya like best. I'll use that one for my sig pic.

Second, and more important, I am looking forintake/exhaust components. Been a while since I've bought anything, and technology has changed radically. I've been doing some preliminary research, but am open to suggestions. Intake, good flow at a good price.
Exhaust, prefer slip-ons, but may go for a full system. Top end is not as critical as maintaining some solid bottom end and midrange torque. Sound, about halfway between stock and obnoxious. LOL!

Thank you for your replies, and I hope you like the pics!

See ya! :)

No problem. Play your cards right and maybe you'll hit a 20% off sale this winter at your local dealer. Things slow down when it's cold, so a little more patience could pay off for you.

I inquired about the rack when I bought the LED tail light, but decided to go another route and make my bags work (which I have since done). But, the dealership photocopied the instructions for me and let me take them home and think about it some more. Have held onto them ever since.............

Hey thanks! I think so too, now if it'd just stop raining!

In the mean time, I know alot of you guys probably already know about this place from other bulletin boards, but I only found out about it recently. It requires you to search by HD part and the prices are WAY less than HD. Has anyone used them? Are these actually HD parts? It has this tailight I just installed & I think only HD sells them. So not to down HD, but I'll be doing my shopping there if it all pans out.

ex. I'm looking at a windshield for $399.99 at my dealer. This website says $313.00. Let me know what you all think!

Hey about that kit for the led taillamp and the bobtail rack. I was reading another post, and maybe I read it wrong, but they said they bought the kit with the rack for the led taillamp and they said that it didn't work. So the dealer contacted HD on it and HD said "NO, the led taillamp will NOT work with the bobtail rack, even with the adapter kit". Does anyone know for sure whether that kit will work or not?

Skips69, TY, bro.
Actually gonna put on slightly bigger bags, bolt-ons, and get rid of the throwovers. Givin' them to my bro with a Sporty, perfect size for him.

Jim, LOOKIN' GOOD, bro!
As far as a windshield, I got a "Memphis Fats", by Memphis Shades, about $265. NICE quality!
Screw Harley and the $400+ price for the same thing! LOL

IMHO, certain things SHOULD say "HD" on them, but other things, well... ;)

TWolf,
Is your Memphis Fats windshield removeable, like the HD quick disconnect? It probably isn't worth the extra money to me for that (for the HD one), but I'd really rather not have a lot of "docking hardware" left behind. That being said, I don't mind 15 minutes of work to take off a windshield & brackets!! Can your send your part number too? Thanks Bro!

As far as that side mount license plate holder goes, there really isn't alot of room to mount that sucker fella's! I'll show ya how it turned out with some pic's shorly.

Coolhand, Hey, Bro!

ThatMS windshield is not a QR with pins or clamps, BUT it does come off quickly with the allens they supply. I washed the bike today, and I R&R'd that sucker as quickly as any HD product, I just keep the allens in my bags. :)

More important, I was at the dealer today (BTW, you have a PM), and I realized the MS windshield is THICKER than the HD! Yeah, no BS. I didn't pull a micrometer on 'em, but I like the FACT that mine is more solid than a HD screen. hehe

As far as a part#, here is a link to gauge what you may want, there are MANY different sizes AND colors available. They say a 17" is good for a guy about 5'9". I got a 15", since I am short, and I have 2" of adjustment on the forks of that FXSTC. I fit it perfectly to my line of sight. I got the clear, call me a traditionalist!

Too much snow now, I haven't been able to truly road test it yet for comfort and fit, but I'm sure I'll be happier than a pig in... Uhh, a warm blanket?? heheee!

Hey all. Here's my 07 custom.
I've had it since lastAugust andhaveadded V&H BSS, SERT, Stage 1 A/C, LED tailight and relocated thefront turn signals.

O.K...this is before the handle bar upgrade.......I'll post some before / after pics of the front end and bars when the fat mini apes, lighted mirrors and handgrips are installed this weekend. Will allow for the disposal of the front turn signals. As it sits, has V&H Big Shots staggered, V&H Fuelpak andNess Big Sucker along with the retro seat. Was supposed to put the bars on this weekend but believe it or not it snowed here in Tucson.....don't you northern folk feel for us down here!!!!

Any issues with the V&H fuel pack? I am going with the V&H Big Radius soon and don't know if I should go PCIII or the fuel pack.

I've no issues with the fuelpak.....from what I gather here the PC III is much more versatile though. I'm not looking at any internal mods anytime soon so the fuelpakworks for me. Apparently some people here don't like the fact that V&H doesn't share their maps, well other than the standard downloads. This will cause issues if you start doing motor upgrades and the like. Was told that the bike hit the rev limiter quite early but with no tack it's hard to tell where that is??? Took the fuelpak out of the mix and it was about the same so it's nothing to do with that. Honestly I have yet to really test the issue, I ride between 75-85 with a few bursts to maybe 100 when cruising so not really a problem for me at this point.

Here are a couple ofshots with Kuryakyns Hyper Charger & Mustache bar installedon my 07. The Mustache bar (IMHO) is a "cheaper" alternative to extended forward controls (for all you long legged bro's!)It does not interfear with the front fender (not even close), and I have mine adjusted about as far forward as it can be. I'm 6'1" and my legs are just slightly still bent (so I won't get lock knee'd) I got it from a local dealer for $139.00 + the pegs of your choice. I like the idea of having three different positions for my feet for long rides. On the stock pegs, feet draped over the stock pegs (with the pegs in the backs of my ankles) and then this new position, which is a little more elevated, but not uncomfortably so.

As for the Hyper Charger I have not received my Power commander & pipes as of yet, however there is not significant decrease/increase as I can tell. It IS slimmer than the stock air filter & immediately noticeable when I jumped in the saddle, the stocker always rested against my inner thigh. If I drop my feet over the tops of the stock pegs, only then does the hypercharger touch my thigh, and then only the back edge. More power or not, I have always loved the looks of the HyperCharger, I think it looks like the blower off a funny car I guess!! The 07 has more than enough power for me STOCK, so If I loose a little power by adding some additional parts for beauty, so be it. Better photo's when the sun comes out!!

Paul thanks for the welcome, I had a local upollstry shop take and inch off the top and each sideof the main seat. He could have scooped two inches out of it (kinda wish he had). And an inch off the top and narrowed the passanger seat some too. He then reused the factory covers and cut off the excess. I like the look, just wanted it smaller.

Looking forward to NO SNOW, glazer.

Had the dealer throw in the retro seat when I bought my bike. That stock seat looks like a couch it is so damn big!!!!! Honestly, the retro seat is not really too bad......put the stock seat on once and the difference in comfort was negligible.......no where near enough to warrant the 'couch'.....when on that thing I have a tendency to reach underneath to try and find the remote!!!!

Have you swapped out the seat as well? Funny, saw the bike in the dealership and loved it. Next time they had the retro seat on the bike on display.....sold me right there!! They threw it in, like a $300 seat....but probably jacked the price up $500 to account for it!!! At any rate that stock seat sits in the garage looking for a purpose....Hmmm....just might have room in that den for a genuine HD recliner....????

Be interested in knowing about the comfort in general. Haven't been over 320 miles in a day but about once. Do you have a windshield for the trip? ...bags? I'm looking at a long ride sometime this spring/summer......but want the shield at the very least beforehand.

coolhand3537
02-13-2007, 04:02 PM
Yep, just got a Quick disconnect from Zanotti's. Stealer wanted 400.00 for it, but I got it for 333.00 shipped. Very pleased with it, it blocks all the direct wind, but you still get a good bit from around/below the shield which blows pretty much straight up the torso. I know it will help drastically with neck stamina, but I'm only planning on making 450-550 miles a day.

I added the mustache bar from Kuryakyn cause I'm 6'1", and needed another cruise position for my legs. Now I can use forward control pegs, droop my feet over them, or my favorite, up on the mustache bar pegs. With a descent bag on the seat behind me it is VERY comfortable.

Got a descent sized bag from local shop, it's a saddleman. The only issue with any bag for the passenger seat is the way the sissybar & back seat recline, but I'm just gonna wedge something in there to help the bag situp behind me for support. I had a "Tombstone" bag from Kuryakyn, EXCELLENT for support, but not enough room in it for "traveling".

Looking very forward to the whole trip. My longest leg was a little over 400 miles and had it not started getting dark & cold I could have made atleast a hundred more easy. No serious saddleass issues with the stock seat at that point. That day was no windshield or bag or mustache bar with cruise pegs. So I'm wondering how far I can go before getting too fatigued!

Mine was the 59802-05 Quick-Release Detachable Compact Windshield - Standard-Height

It pulls up as Compact, but it looks and fits fine. You have almost a full 2" of adjustability up or down the front forks, so you can adjust it for your height. All the way up (and me at 6'1") the top of the windshield rides just below my line of sight (which I'm told is what you want). There are two matching top brackets & two matching lower brackets, to get maximum height you need to revers them because the stock top brackets have a 1" extension on the top, this prevents you from obtaining maximum height.fter the first ride I switched them & got my max height. It is still stable & I can't tell you why they made them different anyway! At 80 mphI had no issues! So I don't think it's gonna come off!

My kit came with a turn signal relocation kit which IMHO is NOT required. There is more than enough clearance for the turn signals in the stock location. The only reason I can think of is to keep turn signal clare from behind the shield at night, which could be very annoying. I wanted to move mine down on the forks anyway so I went ahead & moved them. Only problem is I don't think this kit was made for the FXSTC. I have a small gap between the stems & forks (which drives me crazy) but most people won't notice. I will replace the stalks (which stick out about 2/12 inches from the forks) with a pair of Kuryakyn fork mounts, they will draw the turn signals in and almost flush mount. But for the time being, since they came with the kit, I mounted them anyway, they don't look bad.

The instruction also caal for you to disconnect the clutch cable from the clutch lever & re-route it towards the inside of the handlebars, (mine was already the right way which I noticed after I had it disconnected) but again this isn't necesary as there is PLENTY of room between the windshield & bars. I'll be glad to post some pic's if anyone is interested. Just let me know!

The gap between the rings on the forks/triple tree??? Or is this where the gap between the glass and the forks are ...that creates the draft??? I put the lighted mirrors on my bike and ditched the turn signals. This should reduce the glare on the back of the shield at night I would imagine.

coolhand3537
02-13-2007, 05:33 PM
Definately, I would think so too. This windshield is not even close to covering the mirrors or any portion of them.

The gap I was referring to was between the stem holding the turn signal and the tubes. The little 2 1/2 inch arm should cup right around the tube, but it doesn't. It's snug on the backside (where it's bolted) but that creates the gap on the front.

All in all though, I like the windshield. Never had ridden with one before, it's different! It may look a little big from the full frontal view, but I got it cause I'm looking for added comfort, not beauty. Hell, I like eattin' bugs :-) You can bet when I get there & get back it'll come off! But for now it is a necessity.

Coolhand:

I installed the turn signal relocation kit and had the same problem with a gap in the same place as yours. I thought about rebending the mount to fit better but decided against it because of what that might do to the chrome plating. Pretty shoddy workmanship IMO. Anyone else had similar problems? I tried spacers on the bolt but that only made it worse.

Was that a kit you bought seperately or a kit that came with your windshield? I just wonder if the MoCo knows it don't work! I can't imagine it would be that must difference between the FXSTC & most other models.

It was a kit strictly for relocating the turn signals, but the bracket is identical to the one in your picture. I can't believe that we are the only ones who have had this issue. Could they have been from a bad run. If so, I'll be returning mine real fast!

Pete I would definately return them since you got them seperately. I got mine with the windshield kit & not from my dealership, so I think I'm stuck. But I will be replacing them with the Kuryakyn clamps. They have no choice but to fit snug! Plus I can hide that 2 1/2 inches of wire better that runs out to the light.

I liked them there at first, but the more I see of them the less I like how far out they are from the tubes. So I have been looking around for another way to keep the lights there, but get them in a bit hopefully with a better fitting mounting.
You said Kuryakyn makes one? I know I have a catalog around here someplace, I'll have to look for it in there or in their on-line version.

I was reading and hearing about the 5th gear whine and the "bag of rocks" sounds scarey...it seems to me as if the Customs somehow were blessed because I didnt read any of you bitching about either. sounds like nothing but good things? i have a 05 Triumph and it runs good...dependable looks great...my dad wants to get one last bike and the CUSTOM is definately it if its dependable! It is the best looking bike I think ive ever seen froma factory...fire red pearl/black pearl. *drools* but what good isit if its in the shop every other day? maybe these problems are mainly on thetourers...i heard a couple dyna owners bitching...just wondering...dont want the old man to make a 20 thousand dollar mistake...

I've got 3200 miles so far & I'm taking it to California from North Carolina in a week. I don't have any problems (that I know of!!)

Yes, I believe it was running hot in the beginning. From what I have read they come from the factory in a very LEAN condition. After break in, I changed the air cleaner & pipes. I don't have a temp gauge in my oil tank, but I believe it is running cooler (could be the cooler weather though) I've read posts where some guyssay their bikes temp dropped from 20 to 50 degrees after changing out the A/C & pipes, of course these guys (as well as I) added either the Screamin Eagle Race Tuner (SERT) from HDor the aftermarket Power Commander in order to adjust the fuel/air mixture. In all essence, it was basically enriched which results in cooler running temps.

After the 1000 mile checkup I had the dealer put the synthetic oil in everything. I did have a 5th gear whine which is almost undetectable now. There is a descent "thunk" when I shift, mainly in the low gears, but with a little effort (and less gas) I can shift pretty quietly. I don't think there is a problem there, my 91 Sporty did the same.

I would absolutely buy this bike again, with no second thoughts! (But I haven't bought a new rear tire yet either!) That big 200 wide tire sure looks sweet though!

Good luck & we'll see ya out there!

thanks for the info coolhand,I will most definately pick your brains! damn "the man" once again for meddling thats why they run lean i guess...i was reading about people remapping it themselves...with a laptop...sounds like somthing i could get into. how much does it cost to get this SERT and Power commander? I guess the transmission "problems" are more on the tourers...now i read another post in here...dont even remember where...where some guy said he put Amsoil 75 140? and it eliminated all noises in the trans...some rep from moco told him to put it in...from what I understand through reading...the 5th gear is cut different than the other gears thus the "whir" so its understandable...and the bag of rocks noiseI guess is only on certain bikes...the unlucky ones?. but running it in stock form...it runs hot because its lean you say...but the dealer supposedly gives you a free remap? so it runs richer? maybe cooler? so In stock form theyre not going to turn the heads red or anything right?..I mean ...its just kinda hotter during break in...cools down a bit with a few miles on it...not like nuclear meltdown right? I dont think spending 3k worht of upgrades on somthing you just bought for 20ktomake it runcool. is cool. iswhat im sayin i guess. =p but it sounds like all in all you got a good one...and who cares how much the rear tire costs...cuz that tire is perfect size....and the wheel on the back...is SAVAGE! i love the smooth shine with mini slots...not holes. looks badass....

The SERT I priced was @ $450.00. I got the Power Commander which "YOU" (not necessarily the dealer) can hook to the laptop & upload a new map if you make any additional changes to it. I got the PC IIIand it came with a preloaded map from DynoJet, set up for my pipes, with my air cleaner, for my engine. Now the SERT is quite a bit more advanced, the dealer can link with it & extremely fine tune it, heck mine told me he could make it run backwards. To fine tune it will need to be dyno'ed. The power commander gets you in the ballpark. For what I wanted, the PC III works fine, and I paid $247 I think.

My pipes were $280, A/C around $180/200. So I got the sound & look & got her cooled way down for less than a grand. But hey, none of them come from the factory with a descent sound!

Yeah ive been reading about the power commander for the past20 minutes lol...ive turned into some kinda twisted sponge...yeah the power commander seems to make things alot better...02 eliminators http://www.powercommander.com/813-511.aspxyou can even DLed the "proven" maps depending on your setup...sounds like the other thing is maybe a waste of money, more ways for the local Harley dealer to seperate you from yer cash. The power commander is cool its basically a freedom fighter "saving" your engine from the shackels of the government...gotta shell out some extra cash...I guess its the price you pay for technology...it can be great...but somtimes you have to battle technology with technology I guess...to make it run right lol...you can really upgrade the hell out of these things though it seems. efficient and dependable is my main concern...and sound of course! I have a Triumph America 790cc its dual carbs and chain...I dont have to think about power commanders until now the trumpet isancient technology even though its an 05 ...

Well, the SERT allows your bike to be tuned to it's absolute best, with the assistance of the technicians & a dyno. The PCIII has my engine running cooler than stock, which is healthier for it. I'm not going to do any significant engine mod's, if I were I would seriously have considered the SERT more than I did.I know it's pretty good right where it is now, it already had enough power for me, I've suffered no power loss (that I can tell) from my mod's & that's good enough for me.

My Custom only has about 1600 miles on it, the snow around here kinda puts a damper on riding fun. So its not going to see the road for a while. But I havn't had any issues with it. Its my first Harley so I don't have a lot ofexperience with them to judge against other than my friends old shovelhead and therice burners I have had and ridden before.
Overall the trannyseems to be a heavier shifting unit, but it shifts very positively and considering that the gear sets are much heavier than most bikes it's to be expected. It has to be bigger/hevier dutywhen youconsider it has to be able to deal withall the torque that nicebig inch V-Twin needs to generate to shove abigheavy bike around.
Your right the gears are cut differently, straight cut teeth, vs. the hilical cut gears, and straight cut gears do make more niose. I know it inevetable so Ijust ignore it. Besides once you start playing with louder pipesyou won't be able to hear them anyway.
As for the temp "problems", its trueearly production bikes did runhotter than the currentmodels, mine was one of those. But there was an ECM update that changed the ignition curve and fuel dilevery rates that corrected it and has since been incorporated in all production bikes. I checked the temps in the oil tank on the way to the dealer to have theupdate done and on the way home. There was a solid 15 to 25 degree temp drop on the way homeand it actually seemed to run a bit smoother in the lower to mid rpm range.
I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one if it became necessary to replace this one. I love its looks and ride, its kind of a factory 60's era retrochopper. But with a bigger better engine, better handeling, and better brakeing.
Its faster than my friends older 81 shovelhead, not a bigsurprise consideringits nearly as heavy and only hasa mildly wamed over 80 shovelhead with a 4 speed.
That it doesn't handle as well was asurprise considering it has an FXR type suspension system instead of my softail setup, and even with dual front wheel disks it doesn't seem to be able to stop aswell as mine.
I guess the factory engineers have learned a thing or two in the 25 years since they made his.
If there is one area wherethe newer bikes can't hope to complete with his, its the sound. His has straight drag pipes and an S&S Super E carb andsounds awsome, and in a pinch he can kick start his.
Though I'm not sure that would be an option thatwould be very usefull on mine, I never could get his to start with it when I tried it just for fun. I just couldn't kick it over quick enough, so I doubt I would have any more sucess with an even bigger 96 inch Twin Cam engine.

ok yeah so the way the gears are cut its expected to make some noise...and I take it the 07bikes in the showroom now already have this ECM update ready to go. so theyre good off the showroom floor then.

Straight cut gear teeth make noise, its just the way they are. Just listen to a car engine with a gear drive cam or a big old supercharger on top and you'll have heard it, just louder.
And yes all of the bike made afterlate October or early November have had in put in at the factory. Bikes made before than and already sold can get the update for free from the dealer. If the dealer still has them in stock theyare supposed to do it before the bike is sold.
Its only a five minute fix so its not a big deal. The mechanic who did mine said ittooklonger to pull the seat off than it did to do the update. Probably becasue I have a sissy bar bag that was in hisway.

I rode an 07' this summer. It made a distinct butquietwhine in 5th gear.
My thoughts?
So what..
It's a gear box, and gear boxes make noise.
I thought the tranny was a big improvement, especially the way it shifts.

So much is made out of nothing at all. People spend a few dollars, and then bitch because their world isn't totally perfect.. I say enjoy the ride instead.

Well put George C!
Ya know I've always been told, NEVER buy a first run car. But I wanted a FXSTC since I got rid of my Sporty in 98, and when the MoCo quit making them in 99 & went to the duece, well I was a little upset. In fact the wife was calling the dealer to see if they could chase down a 98 or 99 with lower miles when the chick at the dealership said, "Oh no, they brought it back this year". Well needless to say I was exstatic, I mean that had to be some kind of sign, right? (That's what I told the wife anyway!) So we run down to the dealer 2 miles away & there she was. Everything I ever new or was warned about, was out the window!!!

But IMHO everything has worked out good, and I liked the 5th gear whine! Once I knew it wasn't hurting anything it grew on me fast! The engine seems strong & sound, and that 6th speed is just awesome. I mean it's lugging at 60-65, just beggin for you to twist that throttle!! Anyway, Idoun't think our bike has had any issues like the baggers seem to be having. Mines terrific & I'm looking forward to some long days with her!

You know you got it bad when it's31 degrees & you say, "aw, it ain't that cold, guess I'll take the bike to work (15 miles), it's supposed towarm up later"!! I'm just thankful we don't get the ice & snow everyone else gets.

yeah ive heard that before...never buy a first run car i thought about that...but the thing is...i doubt theyll have a Custom next year as an 08 but it seems it doesnt matter with the 07 customstheyre sound. my dad is selling his house, he built it 16 years ago and is still paying for it hes grows weary of the burden and wants to move to a cheaper location... no toys like a Harley during those times,I mean hes had bikes over the years...even got bounced across the highway and hit by 3 cars on once...that kinda took it out of him haha but hes a tough old bastard oh yeah he is a vietnam vet too marines lol despite all this he remains my kid, yes I am the parent=P...but he wants to go ride with his son (me)before he gets too old, cuz its a good time and it keeps him out of trouble. (bar everyday lol yeah...everyday)and he deserves a good bike thats not gonna be a beautiful hunk of loud rattling**** going down the road. and plus im gonna be riding the thing too...and i dont wanna look like a jackass and feel like one for telling my old man this 20k "Newage" Harley was good.but it seems not the case in the 07 Customs. The heat issue was covered and the trans issue was covered, you guys are really helpful. ya know...for the ones that have the problems...we can only hope that their ownerswear thesuit of the yuppie....muahahahah.

Here are some pictures of my new 2007 FXSTC. I traded up from a Sportster XL50 last week which had already put about 10,000 miles on in 6 months. Plan on adding the following accesseries: Bobtail rack, Vance/Hines Big Shots Staggered, Stage 1, SERT, and new grips.

When I got mine they only had one and it was black. But since I prefer black, that's whatI got.
But I have to admit theblue/silver looksa lot nicer than I thought it would just looking at paint chips in the catalog.
What widshield is that and is it detachable?

How does it work on the road at speed? And do you remeber the model numberr of it?
I'm looking for one for longer trips, but don't want or need it for around town.
So I'm looking around at different options. I'm "hoping" to get something that's nearly all "glass" without any bars in it, but I refuse to rule one out just because it may not be perfect.
For things like windshieldsfunction has a higher priority than form.

Hey Y'All. I am a brand new member and new owner of a 2007 Softail Custom. I added new pegs, windshield, V&H Big Rad pipes, lowering kit, flush mount fuel guage and tank (really cool), Kuryakin ISO grips with the throttle control, chrome Master Cylinder and covers.

I have a few more parts to install once the weather gets warmer.

The color is Jake/Elwood Blue. I traded in a 1998 Suzuki Intruder for this AWESOME bike.

Hey All

Please welcome me to the "Big Boys" club. Just got my first Harley home today, an FXSTC in red pearl/ black pearl two tone. Jeeezzz shes the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. I was riding a 2006 Honda VTX 1300Cand it is a great bike, but man when I saw the Softail custom with the 96 incher and six speed I knew that was IT!! Of course I've been wanting a Harley for the better part of my life but the honda was just so much easier to get into financially. I guess everything happens for a reason though as it seems as if the money was there and then I first laid eyes on this beautiful Custom. Anyway, long story short... she's mine now and I'm about as happy as it gets.

Jeeezzz, now the work really starts huh? First mods will be exhaust of course: Vance & Hines Big Shots Staggered, better flowing A/C and some sort of re-program, maybe a SERT. And let's not forget chrome, chrome and more chrome... I'm still out on the stock seat. Damn if it isn't comfy but I just don't care too much for the "sofa cushion" look and I'm thinking about the Sundowner deep bucket. I like the bars O.K. but will pull them back just a tad.

Anyway, finally glad to be here posting for real instead of lurking. I live in south eastern Kentucky so if anybody is nearby... let's go ridin!!

P.S. Pictures will be up soon!!

Well I got the tri-bar LED light, bracket, and bobtail fender rack all put together today and it looks MUCH better than the original.
This is a pic of it with the light on, I took another with the brake light on but it washed out the pic, little too bright for the camera I guess.
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m103/Citoriplus/IMG_3427.jpg
Sorry I got excited andforgot to put on thereflector strip before I took the pic. It fits in that space below the light and would(and now does) cover those two screw heads in the middle.
One thing I'm happy about is that thesteel bracket for the rack is much heavier than theplastic of the original tail light and plate housing. It should easily allow you to put much heavier things on there than10 lbs. that the original setup is limited (HD rating) for.

BTW Why is it that everytime I do something like this I find a dozen new places where I need to be more careful when I'm cleaning and polishing. And now I went and got dirt and finger prints all over everything from the oil tank back.

HAH...

Aint that the danged truth!! Heck I spent almost 2K on my Honda before I knew what happened...Lost most of it in the trade as extras don't mean squat. I'll never trade another motorcycle as long as I live... I'll just sell it outright but man was I in a hurry to get into this Custom!! Oh well, at least I'm planning on keeping this one hopefully forever.

And yes, just my first set of planned mods already exceed the 5K mark. Probably be twice that when and if I ever get done!! Jeeezzz man, what have I done?? Gotta love it though.
