Default 69 and 72 engines what are they worth?

Hi i have 2 basketcase-project bikes that im going to part out and i was wondering what a complete minus trans magneto someting( the kind that uses no battery) 69 Sprtster XLCH engine and a complete 72 or 74 1000cc Sportster XLH engine are worth and would i be better off selling them whole or parting them out.

Default RE: 69 and 72 engines what are they worth?

Are these complete bikes, but basket cases? The engines:
'69 engine w/o tranny guts and magneto is probably only worth a $500 bill and probably less, depending upon condition. The cases are worth something to somebody trying to rebuild an old one as there are basically no aftermarket companies making old Sporty cases.
The other engine's value is going to be dependent on whether it is a '72 or '74. The '72 is the less desirable as it was the 1st year for the 1000cc displacement. The '74 is stronger in certain areas as the MoCo fixed some of the bugs and weaknesses found on the earlier model 1000s. Value? $500, again for a complete engine. Maybe a little less if it's a '72, and a bit more if it's a '74.
If these are basket case bikes, then I'd put the value at about $1500. One thing about Sportsters is they vary widely in value in different parts of the country. Look at a Cycle Trader or something similar for prices in your area. Check out any local swapmeets. You'll get a good idea of asking, but not necessarily selling, prices.
