I'm thinking about taking 18 months or more to build a bar hopper. Maybe order a few parts every month and work on it on and off as time permits. Something low with wide tires, external belt primary, flat black with black wrapped pipes, minimal chrome, maybe all satin finish....with a big displacement S&S or RevTech in it....
Sorta like an Exile bike but not quite. Besides, his kits are rather pricey.
Anyone out there have something similar or some ideas on where I should look for ideas?

Hey marauder. You should find more than enough idea's on this forum. Lots good people on here. Try looking for kit bikes other than those PRICEY ones ...theres alot out there to be found. Several places to purchase just about anything you might want. If you want to try piecing a bike together, where I work ( R & B Custom cycles ) 1(405)631-1218 have several hardtail frames in stock , misc. parts, or kits hanging around our shop. Heck the boss man just mocked up a hardtail with blacked out springer front end today, its got the old school look for sure. Anyway good luck with you future build. Im sure more replys will come on this forum.

Yeah, I've been looking at both hard and softails but have never ridden a hardtail. Even if I do this on a budget it will still add up so I want it to be somewhat comfortable so I'm leaning towards a softail.
I came across this Saxon bike in Hot Bike mag and it is similiar to what I'm after.
I built a hardtail, if you do go with it, you better at least put some springs on the seat. My opinion, go with the softail. Your butt will thank you. You will also have much better results if you ever decide to sell. Been there, done that.

My only recomendation is build a softail! Rigids are nice but with the new frames today you can get the same looks but w/ shocks! (I have a rigid)
I have built or restored many bikes in the last 30 years. I built this softail for about 12k over Ebay, Internet and EBay contacts, but finished it about 3 years ago.. (well i say finish, but they are truely never done)...! And it can be done cheaper today! It, by far, is the most comfortable bike I have ever owned, because I built it to fit me. But, with the contacts I have today... it would be about 3 to 4 grand cheaper. But I do build alot of parts myself. I bought the stock Evo engine at the dealer, which I wouldn't do again.. nothing against the dealer, just price, and trannies have come down in $$. Personally, I am not into the "kit" thing... it all depends on your skills, tools, room to build it and confidence level. Nothing like riding a ride you build yourself... kit or otherwise!! Good Luck!
If you decide on a kit, choose one where you can personally pick it up and inspect contents before handing over your money and finding out you didn't get what was advertised.Been there and done it.
