Good Point. And while the thought of crap is in our minds. If you see a tanker truck filling the tanks drive right on by. The inrush of fuel from the tanker will stir up any sediment in the storage tanks. Takes about 3 to 4 hours for it to settle. Not all stations have filters on their pumps. Or water seperators to think of it.

how true !!!

i hauled to the gas stations for years and years.......... NEVER ever !! gas up when the truck is dumping...never.

course ? ya wont know that the truck just left, but ? go inside and ask 1st.
you wont believe the water and crud in the bottom of those tanks.

p.s. my bikes runs just fine on reg, gas.

i buy anything except exxon.

weet

My manual stated to "use lower octane fuel" like 87. I think it's mostly a heat issue. Higher octane fuels and methanol tend to burn hotter, and on an air cooled engine, you dont need the extra heat, especially when sitting idling.

WRONG WRONG WRONG!!!
Higher octane means COOLER burning. Higher compression bikes make more heat because they "squeeze" the mixture more, so they need cooler, or slower burning gasoline to maintain an even burn.
And I don't know why HD recommends higher octane for their 8.8 to 1 compression TC's. They should run fine on 87 octane, or 85 octane at higher elevations. You need the hotter faster burning fuel at higher elevations because of the thinner air- less oxygen for the engine to burn. So don't hesitate to use that cheap crap! Actually all the grades are the same quality. The only difference is the octane.

When I first got my '03 Ultra Classic I put a tank of 87 octane in it. The bike didn't like it at all. It gets only 91 or better now.

When I bought my ultra a month ago the service dept. manager told me to only buy 87 octane if it was the only thing available. He also said to never, never buy any grade gas from.....well, from the company whose name is the same as what you find on the seashore.

I use the best pump gas there is at whatever station I am at. I don't go to any "favorite" station or brand. Book says 91 octane and for 4 gallons or so it isn't much more money.
I called the local dealer and asked about the ethanol. They said no problem. That's good because here in Northern VA ALL the gas has it.

One thing to remember is that with most pumps having one hose and nozzle for all grades, the first slug of gas you put in the tank is whatever the PREVIOUS guy bought. If you figure the hose is 10' long from the selector valve to the nozzle, and the hose has an inside diameter of 5/8", then the volume in the hose is about a pint. If the previous guy put in 87, and you only add a gal of 92, you end up getting something more like 91 in your tank.

It seems like a nit, but I know guys who are always adding only a couple of gallons to their tank. Doing so lowers the effective octane that you get in your tank, which is a bummer at today's price for premium. So I always run my tank down to the last gallon or more before filling up.

The best thing is to use a station which has pumps that have a separate hose for each grade. Then you know that every drop of gas you pump is the same grade. At least that's the theory.

I try to use only the highest grade at the pump.
Just a warning the first 2 1/2 gals out of a single hose pump you'll get whatever the last user pumped.
Its not good for your bike to change octane grades at every tank.
Look at the price on the pump the last used fuel should be highlighted.
For the riders using Plus look for a pump that last used premium and pump out regular you'll get plus.

I blew it the other day put in 87 by mistake. I did notice the difference although it's not bad I'm trying to run this out in a hurry and go with 93.

I am going to disagree with you on this based upon information I found regarding "Top Tier Gas" that: www.toptiergas.com

TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline is a recently established new standard for gasoline performance. Four of the world's top automakers, BMW, General Motors, Honda, and Toyota recognize that the current EPA minimum detergent requirements do not go far enough to ensure optimal engine performance.

Since the minimum additive performance standards were first established by EPA in 1995, most gasoline marketers have actually reduced the concentration level of detergent additive in their gasoline by up to 50%. As a result, the ability of a vehicle to maintain stringent Tier 2 emission standards have been hampered, leading to engine deposits which can have a big impact on in-use emissions and driver satisfaction.

These automakers have raised the bar. TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline help drivers avoid lower quality gasoline which can leave deposits on critical engine parts, which reduces engine performance. That’s something both drivers and automakers want to avoid.

The lack of detergents appear to be a big factor in this. I noticed some of these problems last fall / winter in Milwaukee with GM cars that would use gas at certain retailers. Basically it came down to "poor" gas quality and the drivers needed to get their injectors replaced.

Retailers:

QuikTrip
Chevron
Conoco
Phillips
76
Shell
Entec Stations
MFA Oil Company
Kwik Trip/Kwik Star
The Somerset Refinery, Inc.
Chevron-Canada
Aloha Petroleum
Tri-Par Oil Company
Shell-Canada
Texaco

I personally try to use 93 octane at a minimum and only from these retailers.

In the Oklahoma heat if I use anything but premium it pings like crazy.  It's hard to find 93 here too, pretty much 91 is all that can be found.

In my 01 Sportster I burned 87 octane. No problems at all.
When I got the 06 Ultra  I just kept right on with 87 octane. When I would get off work at 2:30 am ,and  it was cool to chilly, the bike started fine but would cough and sputter just as if it was carbeurated. Thought maybe I had the early injectors which I didn't.
Switched to 93 octane and the problem was solved. Mileage went up to about 42mpg 2up. First vehicle of any type that I ever noticed any difference with the grade of gas I put in it.

Which Calif gas is best? I know in winter sometimes not same fuel blends in these parts. I did see the post ref Chevron Premium in Calif. Anyone else heard of a particular gas that might be superior? Iv'e been using Shell Premium, but open to suggestions...

Thanks

Always try to use Sunoco 93. Bike runs great on it. Stay away from WAWA their premium is garbage and my bike would have a hard time starting every time I filled up at one.

If available, will use Chevron super unleaded, otherwise some other brand name gas... 91 octane, if available...There are a lot of stations in my area that 90 is the highest octane available.  Heard somewhere the higher the altitude, the lower the octane requirement is.
