Three gallons of high test, then a drive over the Airport and two gallons of Aviation fuel. There is the obvious down side for the valves tho, I found that out through experimenting with how much Aviation fuel to add.

I use premium only........If my engine was stock I'm not sure I would........From what I have heard, the only difference between premium and regular is the octane and you only need the higher octane if you have high enough compression to need it to avoid knocking and pinging....

ORIGINAL: PLHOG One thing to remember is that with most pumps having one hose and nozzle for all grades, the first slug of gas you put in the tank is whatever the PREVIOUS guy bought. If you figure the hose is 10' long from the selector valve to the nozzle, and the hose has an inside diameter of 5/8", then the volume in the hose is about a pint. If the previous guy put in 87, and you only add a gal of 92, you end up getting something more like 91 in your tank. It seems like a nit, but I know guys who are always adding only a couple of gallons to their tank. Doing so lowers the effective octane that you get in your tank, which is a bummer at today's price for premium. So I always run my tank down to the last gallon or more before filling up. The best thing is to use a station which has pumps that have a separate hose for each grade. Then you know that every drop of gas you pump is the same grade. At least that's the theory. PL This is one of my pet peeves, My bike has 10.5 comp. and I usually put 93 in it and that from the couple (2) stations around me that still have seperate hoses for each grade. This thing will ping pretty bad with less octane. When on a trip though you don't have much choice and I fill up with the highest grade I can get.

I avoid pumps with only one hose for all grades. According to Weights and Measures, up to the first quart will be whatever the last person was pumping. When you're only getting 3-4 gallons that's barely at the octane rating advertised in the first place, and paying a premium price, why settle for less?

ORIGINAL: jmetro unfortunatly in cali, all you can get is 91, 93 is not offered. to anyone else out here, i'd say go with the premium, since they add soooooo much crap nowadays, normal gas sucks. the HD has only had 91, as for my 76 honda, i accedentally put 87 in it when i first moved out here....... it wouldn't even start. drained the fuel into my truck and refilled it with 91, fired right up. damn epa and fuel additives.......... damn california........ If you like 93 octane, just att 10% Toluene or Xylene to your tank of 91 octane (the oil companies use these as octane boosters too). You can buy them by the gallon at paint or chemical supply stores. DO NOT buy commercial octane boosters. They are very expensive, and only raise your octane by a few points, and contain additives (like ATF and mineral spirits) that do more harm than good. Toulene R+M/2...114 Cost...$4.50/gal Mixtures with 92 Octane Premium 10%...94.2 Octane 20%...96.4 Octane 30%...98.6 Octane Notes: Common ingredient in Octane Boosters in a can. 12-16 ounces will only raise octane 2-3 *points*, I.e. from 92 to 92.3. Often costs $3-5 for 12-16 ounces, when it can be purchased for less than $5/gal at chemical supply houses or paint stores. Formula #2 - Xylene R+M/2.........117 Cost...........$2.75/gal Mixtures with 92 Octane Premium 10%...........94.5 Octane 20%...........97.0 Octane 30%...........99.5 Octane

8.9 : 1 compression ratio is not going to burn 93 octane anyway. other than the difference in octane rating there is no difference in quality of the fuel.

As recommended in the CVO Screamin' Eagle Road King manual - 93 + Octane. I use only gasoline from Shell.

Anyone ever try Lucas fuel additive in their gas? I use in my cars every third tank or so to keep FI clean do not know if it is safe for FI on HD bikes? Thoughts?

same here,(unless your in nh too), ran 1 gall through the bike liked it a lot, then found 100 oct, put in 3 gall,,, think its to much, pulled plugs after 100 miles and they look ok, but looked in w/ a bore scop and saw the pistons looked rusty(last winter they were just slightly carbon coated)..thinking ill drain the 100 oct. and fill w/ reg. hope its ok,will tear down this winter(going to anyway),,,,,,,,

I usually run 91 octane pump gas mixed with 105, 106,98, 110 or any other VP gas (unleaded) ....I figure one gallon of VP racing fuel is WAY cheaper than one quart of some cheesy octane booster and there is a major difference in how my bike runs...it runs good on pump gas, but it runs WAY BETTER on VP.

I have never used anything but premium in all my bikes so I have no idea how they run on lower octane.

H-D fuel systems are designed to use, and are tested to withstand, up to 15% ethanol. EPA requires emissions controlled vehicles to be fueled with pump gas that contains no more than 10% ethanol. It is technically illegal to fuel an emissions controlled vehicle on anything else unless it was designed and certified as a Flex Fuel Vehicle. However, several states are seeking waivers from EPA to allow use of E20 which is the designation for 20% ethanol/gasoline blends. (Minnesota, Hawaii, and probably others) The big push for using more ethanol in fuels up to and including E85 has alot of people confused. I've experimented with 89 octane E10 versus 87 octane 100% gasoline and the bike actually experiences a little bit of knock with the 89 octane E10 but not with the 87 octane. The reason is that after it's heat cycled in the bike a couple of times the 89 octane fuel isn't 89 anymore. Some of the ethanol evaporates after a while and the octane is reduced. Where I live it sells for the same price so many people think 89 is better, but a lot those riding air cooled motorcycles don't understand the whole story. Ethanol is an oxygenate. It has oxygen in it. The optimum air fuel ratio for gasoline is different than optimum for ethanol, so the more ethanol in the fuel. The more ethanol in the fuel the more fuel you'll need to maintain optimum air/fuel. Closed loop (O2) feedback systems will adjust. I've experimented with the S&S closed loop system on my bike and it will run fine on E20 after the ECM has adapted to the fuel. Bottom line, you can probably run your H-D on E20, but I wouldn't. E10 is fine but I try to avoid it also. Ethanol will increase the octane but it evaporates out of the fuel more quickly than other knock inhibitors. With the gas tank sitting above the air cooled H-D V-Twin you're compounding the problem by heating the fuel and boiling off the ethanol. BigWave
