I put a gallon or two of 100 gas in mine. They have it at the pump I fuel at. Usually put 93 in when traveling outside my area.

I use 91 octane as recomended in owners manual. Have not found a pump with a higher octane in the town that I live in. Will have to try a higher octane when I come across one. As of now everything is A O kay.

In my Duece, stock except for intake and pipes, I run 89. I was always told that running too high an octane level can actually be as damaging as too low due to an incomplete burn and also causing fouled plugs. The rule of thumb I was given is to run whatever octane level keeps the engine from knocking and going higher has no advantage and is actually not good. Premium by me is 93 and when I run it in my Duece, it actually seems to make my engine run worse..............My Road King has a 117" build at 10.8-1 compression, so only 93 for it. My Roadstar is recommended at 87 which is all I ever put in it, and it runs great. From what I have been told the basic principal is, lower compression-lower octane.........higher compression-higher octane. I don't know if there's a chart somewhere that says for "x" compression you should run "x" octane level, but it would be nice if there was.  It's not about the money as nothing is too good for my Harleys......

Has anyone heard the same about "too high" an octane level? To show how inconsistent opinions are, I was always under the understanding that the higher the octane the slower the burn to allow for higher compression which makes sense to me. Here are some varied opinions I have read. If you check out the websites below the exerpt from an "expert" you will see the opposite that says higher octane-slower burn...............It only gets more confusing. Is there a chemist out there that knows the truth!

Higher octane = burns faster
Lower Octane = burns slower

Now do not mistake burn faster = more power

Like many people have said. Higher octane allows you to run higher compression or forced induction. Other than that you are wasting your money.

Here are also a couple of websites with info on octane levels:

Ok, here's the deal with gasoline and octane. Gasoline is an extremely combustable--explosive--liquid. When it is compressed --as in the combustion chamber-- it can ignite spontainiously before the spark plug fires. This causes what we call a spark knock or a ping. If this happens while the piston is on the way up this is called detonation--the effects of which can be terminal to an engine.  Octane is added to gasoline to reduce the spontanious ignition of gasoline under compression, so the spark plug can fire the fuel/air mixture. The lower the octane--the more chance of spontanious combustion--the higher the octane--the less chance of spontainious combustion; a higher octane % in gasoline actually reduces the explosiveness of the raw gasoline.  The octane rating really depends on what the compression ratio of your engine is. A stock engine that has a 8.5 or 8.8 to 1 one will run great on 87 octane. Any compression ratio around 8.9 or 9.5 to 1 will need 89 or 91 octane. Any compression ratio higher than that need the highest octane you can get..  But remember--compression ratio is the determining factor in the octane debate. If your bike does not ping or detonate on 87 octane then it is just fine to run.
It is true that a higher octane gasoline will burn cooler and cleaner but it must be compressed accordingly to do so. If your engine does not have enough compression then you are waisting your money..

Greetings,

Only BP Ultimate in mine! It's well worth the extra money you have to spend for it.

I run nothing but premium and right about now it's around $4.20 a gallon where I live in California.

In my humble opinion I think we should all be running Iraqi gas for free, seems to me it's already been paid for.

I didn't see a response on your 'what gas' poll that allowed for
what I do.
I fill up on high test, next tank refill regular. Next tank refill High, next tank regular.

Luckily, I live in a FLAT state (florida) so knocking while climbing a mountain does not come
into play.

My 95 is 10.5:1, and I run 91 octane. \\; Occansionally I''ll throw some 100 octane in there (not that it needs it), but it smells so good!

I get 110 octane from the pump, it''s purple and smells a bit like laquer thinner.
I''ll sometimes use the 100 octane (red in color) which is also at it''s own dedicated pump, but they both go for the same price of $6.49 per gallon.
I figure if I''m paying that much, may as well get the extra 10 octane.
I guess the real question is whether the fact that the 110 is leaded will do any harm to the engine.
I am emissions exempt and don''t have any related equipment at all on my bike.
This engine is running at 10.5:1 compression.
