I just got done changing out the Syn3 in my trans for Redline Shock Proof Heavy...........I already voted Syn3 so maybe a Mod can change it.
Either way, I thought I'd give it a try from all the advice here on the forums.

I'll be doing a couple hundred miles tomorrow so we'll see how well it shifts, etc.

The bike has about 2600 miles on it right now. I had the Stealership do the 1000 service right at 1000 miles. When I was removing the trans drain plug, I found that it wasn't even tightened!!!!! AND, the 0-ring was shredded and split, and the tech put a bunch of liquid pipe dope on the threads. WOW! I'm so glad I had a falling out with Van Nuys HD about trying to get 10% off on a seat. My bike is only 2 months old and when I asked the parts manager if I could get 10% off on the new seat he told me no way, never gonna happen, etc.

I'm not surprized, I guess, to find the drain plug so hacked in there. I guess everything is hacked over there........

I'm a heavy equipment tech by trade and had the correct size o-ring on my service truck. Will never have that dealer touch my bike again. I'll be doing all of my own service work and I'll go to the great guys over at Glendale HD for any warranty issues.

Odd how an oil change post became a dealer thrashing.

AMSOIL 75W90 Severe Duty.

Also, AMSOIL 20W50 in crankcase & primary.

If you use syn3 in your tranny, youre playin with fire. 20w50 is not heavy enough for a transmission.

So far the Redline Shockproof Heavy is working very well for me. Trans shifts very nicely and does not seem as noisy as with the Syn 3.

Man, you guys got me scared! Ok so I only have 4500 miles.. I'm dropping that stuff out of my bike this weekend if I can. Screw waiting to 5000. And yes, I've noticed the bike shifts pretty clunky, and I've not been overly impressed with the engine at idle also.. Sounds like too many parts rubbing and bouncing around. That crap is coming out of there THIS weekend.

Would Royal Purple 75X140 work in the Trany or is it to heavy? I am changing my three holes at 600 miles. I have the RP along with ATF from my F250 and would like to not have to look for more.

Not to up on the needs of sporties but I would say their sport trans oil myself. You run into a different scenario here with the shared oils in a sporty.

Mobile-1 75-90 synthetic.

Wish Redline or Amsoil were a bit easier to get but Mobile-1 v-twin/mx4t/75-90g series has worked well for me for several years in Harley's and British twins.

Wonder why not many folks have been using the Bel Ray tranny fluid. I'm about to dump some into my tranny based on some pretty good feed back from several unbiased resources.

I personally run Amsoil 20w50 in the engine and primary and Amsoil Sever Duty 75w-90 Gear Lube in the Transmission.

I just did my first service on my new Dyna and while working on it I remembered your post about the pipe dope on the drain plug. It looks like engine, trans and primary plugs on my bike all came from the factory with pipe dope on them. Obviously the tech should've replaced the bad o-ring, but maybe the pipe dope was already on there?

What the heck is the o-ring even for if they are going to slather it in pipe dope?!?!?! If the tech indeed added MORE dope without thoroughly cleaning the threads, then that plug may not even go in far enough for the o-ring to seat.

Anyway, just wanted to share my observation. I wonder if it is used as much as a thread locker as a sealer? I don't think there is anything wrong with using it, but you gotta clean that crap out each time and use a reasonable amount.

I changed from the standard Harley Transmission Oil to Mobil One 75-90 today in my 1996 Fatboy. Shifting is easier and smoother. Finding neutral is easier. I did not belive it would make this difference, but it did.

Finally got the tranny done this weekend.. Dropped the SYN-3 and man did I see some stuff on the drain plug. There's been some wear in there. Replaced with shockproof heavy.. Felt a little uneasy at first pouring in some stuff that looked like gooey melted strawberry slushy. hehehe :) It's like pink slurpy syrup.. Hopefully got enough in there.. I rode, then checked and added more to correct level (I hope). I have a little bit left with nothing to do with it.. Is that normal? An 04 softail doesn't take a full quart?

Anyway, I could tell an IMMEDIATE improvement in shifting. Though on the roads I ride, I've really noticed that gears 1-4 are just to get you to between 0mph and cruising speed in 5th. Hard to tell any other improvements other than shifting ease, I'll assume all the little gears in there are a lot happier now just based on the shifting feedback.

Along with lubing the throttle and clutch cables (much improved), the bike is a happy camper and just about ready for Myrtle Beach.

I also switched over to the RL shockprroof a week ago and had the same reservations about pouring what looked like Pepto Bismol into my tranny. I didn't notice any real improvements either.
