What oil WILL you be running (your preference), and not just what's in there now from the last service, possibly from the dealer service.

I run the HD primary oil after draining the syn 3 that came in the bike and I like the hookup on the clutch better with that oil. Otherwise it's 10/30 or 10/40

I use ATF due to the best compatibility with clutch discs. anything will work though. lubrication and cooling of the clutch housing is job of the fluid and most any will do that.

Everyones opinion is different. I like the HD primary oil in there, I think it gives a bit more lubrication to the chain and sprockets myself. Some clutch packs recommend the atf for their chutches. Depends on what you're running for disks

TC,
Now that Harley is not longer selling their primary fluid what you going with? You going to use their new stuff or switch over to a regular motor oil. Did my other two fluids ( Mobil 1 15-50) Crank and (Mobil 75-90) Tranny. Still up in the air on the primary.
Could not find any HD primary fluid at dealer. Local stores also did not have any of the listed items used by members here. Would standard Mobil 10w- 40 be a good choice?
Or should I stick with a syn like Mobil 1 15-50.
Thanks for all you add to the forum.

20/50 V-Twin Amsoil, Primary, and Crankcase. Amsoil Severe Gear Oil in transmission. Mobil1 V-Twin 20/50, and Mobil1 Gear oil would be my second choice.

My two cents.

Roaddog ....I'm sorry I didn't get back to you sooner.

If the primary oil is not available from HD any longer, I would prefer a non synthetic motor oil in the 10/40 range myself of any of the popular brands in the primary. You don't want an oil with a friction modifier in it.

i don't know if they did or not but tc said they no longer recommend it for the tranny and after reading all of the posts i think i'm gonna go with mobil 1 v-twin 20w/50 in motor mobil 75/90 gear oil in tranny and just plain ol mobil 10/40 in primary and maybe my bike will actually shift a little nicer?? and truly be protected i should have known better than to listen to the stealer..lol

When you say plain ol Mobil 1 10/40, is this the Mobil 1 MX4T motorcycle oil? It is used by many metrics with the crank/wet clutch together. If not MX4T, which Mobil 1 10/40? Thanks.

What do you guys think of using Rotella T 15W-40 non-synthetic in the primary?

Friend of mine gave me a case of Rotella, and I'd hate to see it go to waste.

BTW, I run Mobil V-Twin 20W-50 in the crank and Mobil 75W-90 in the tranny.

I just switched to shell rotella t 15w40 in the crankcase and primary. no problems that i can tell. everything seems to work fine. i put belray in the trans, but will probably switch to a 75w90 next fluid change.

I use whatever is on sale at Walmart or Autozone. 10W-40 works fine for me in temps of 10 deg. to 90 deg. F.

Where do you buy the M1 V-twin oil at?

I think I would use a 4-stroke motorcycle oil that can be used with a clutch in the primary.I have some Motul 20-50,think Ill give that a try.

Switched from Syn3 to HD Formula+ in the transmission and primary chain case. First impression is that the tranny shifts smoother/easier. This on recommendation from Zion's ace tech with 28 years experience. The occasion of the oil change was a leak around the shifter shaft and replacing all seals while we were in there. Is it possible the systhetic damaged the seals? Just wondering. The Ultra has 40,000 on it, always maintained by HD.

While we're talking oil, I'm having a wrist pin put in my rear cylinder. My mechanic swears it's because the previous owner and therefore on the PO's recommendation, I ran Castrol 20w50 . He says regular oil is not made to put up with the heat especially here in the south. The previous owner had a crate engine put in 20k ago because it developed a wrist pin problem and the dealer forgot to put the keeper in when he rebuilt the top ends. Two engines, two wrist pins. Now understand the previous owner changes religously at 2500 miles, uses Fram filters and never fails to keep up with maintennance. His other bike 97 RK has 170k on it and still running strong.

Did the auto oil cause the wrist pin problems? I dunno, but I know when I get it back, if there ain't synthetic in the crankcase, there soon will be. Probably Mobil1 V Twin and Mobil 1 75-90 in the tranny. Not sure what in the primary, maybe HD formula +

Ride safe

Bubba

I voted other. When i bought my bike it had regular HD primary oil in it. I switched to Lucas 20/50 and that was a nice improvement but............ Last week (4,000 miles later) i drained the Lucas out and put a quart of B&M trick shift ATF in, WOW! what a difference. Give it a try on the next oil change, you'll be surprised at the results. It's all good.

I am at my 1000 mile first service on my 2007 fat boy. I am going with all Syn3. its easier to use the same fluid in all three. (engine, primary chain case, and transmission)

I have not ready any comparisons yet between Syn3 and standard heavy duty Gear Oils traditionally used. But wanted to quiet down the 5th gear by going Synthetic. Not sure what ships with 2007 HD bikes from the factory? anyone know if its Syn3 or some special Break-IN oil?

heres a marketing blurb by Amasol but the charts are interesting at the bottom section of the webpage: http://oilhelp.com/motorcycle/harleyvsamsoil/harleyvsamsoil.htm
