Default OK to turn axle around?

I'm removing the rear wheel & tire tonight so that i can have a new tire mounted tomorrow. I noticed that i'm going to have to remove the pipes (big shot longs) to get the axle out...[:@]...just put 'em on three weeks ago..

Is it OK to turn the axle around so the nut is on the right side?...sure would make it easier next time. sounds like a silly question...but I don't want any surprises..like my rear wheel passing me..

the brake pads look ok, but I doubt they have another 10k in them...so I'll replace those while I'm in there.

Thanks....<headed out to the shop>

Yeah, you can turn it around.....

But will you still have room to get a Tq Wrench on it to get it to spec (60 Ft/Lbs)??????

Something to think about......

Unless you have a 15/16" Torque adapter, then it won't be a problem......

And don't forget to clean the axle while it is out and slather on the anti-sieze prior to reinstallation.......

Have you had it on a lift to see if tire drops down far enough to for axle to clear pipes? May have to disconnect shocks

Bob,

I'm reinstalling my rear wheel as well - just back from chrome. I don't have any anti-seize compound - can I just use wheel bearing grease instead?

Thanks,
Doug

I wouldn't, but you are the one servicing your bike......

Shouldn't be that much of a stretch, but be on the safe side and make sure your axle is really clean and smooth, along with the inner bearing races prior to lubing up......

I though that they put them through that way as a safety feature. Direction of rotation and threads etc...

I think that would only apply if it was a rotating part.

In case of a bearing seizure, the axle would be tightened instead of loosened when it is installed properly .Reversing it in the swing arm will give you the opposite.
